Istotnym problemem współczesnego świata jest skrajnie nierówny podział dóbr. Sytuację tą pogłębia zjawisko nadkonsumpcji. Prowadzi ona do uzależnienia potencjalnych konsumentów oraz wzmocnienia gospodarczej władzy korporacji. Tym poważnym niedomaganiom obecnej ekonomii może zaradzić zmiana podejścia do człowieka, zarówno jako animatora, jak i beneficjenta przemian ekonomicznych. Jednym tych którzy zwracają uwagę na błąd antropologiczny leżący u podstaw współczesnej ekonomii jest ks. profesor Józef Majka. Przedstawiana przez niego personalistyczna wizja etyki gospodarczej jawi się antidotum na bolączki współczesnej epoki nadkonsumpcji. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zaprezentowanie fundamentów tej etyki, w szczególności w postaci zasad leżących u jej podstaw, z ich odniesieniem do problemu współczesnej nadkonsumpcji.

The aim of this paper was to discuss competent communication, specifically humorous statements containing ambiguity. Attention was brought to difficulties when deciding between informative and humorous manners of communication. It is not easy to differentiate between the two manners, which means we do not always adjust to the correct manner when speaking with our conversationalist. It brings special difficulties, when the communicator knowingly does not state what manner his speech should be received in. Farther, we cannot always form a phrase in a certain manner, even if the manner is known to us, which can lead to further issues in communication. Communication competency, including humour competency is not only the ability to understand and appreciate the humorous aspect in the message, but also the ability to formulate a humorous statement appropriate for the situation and to the aims raised by an individual.

Perspektywa katolicka wskazuje niezmiennie na Boży fundament wszystkich słusznych instytucji i praw. Dotyczy to zarówno państwa, jak i prawa własności. Ta ostatnia ma charakter wielowymiarowy: indywidualny i społeczny. Potwierdza to odwołanie do przyrodzonej godności człowieka. Rzeczywista skuteczność działań fiskalnych państwa jest współuzależniona od ich zrozumienia przez podatników. Klarowność w tym obszarze rodzi zaufanie społeczne i pogłębia poczucie bezpieczeństwa. Na władzy ciąży obowiązek nakładania danin o umiarkowanej wysokości, sprawiedliwym charakterze i czytelnej strukturze. W warunkach państwa demokratycznego inicjowanie zmian legislacyjnych jest podstawową drogą do eliminowania potencjalnej niesprawiedliwości i wprowadzania rozwiązań bardziej solidarnych. Katolicka perspektywa stosunków podatkowych akcentuje wzajemne obowiązki władzy i podatników oraz ich współodpowiedzialność za dobro wspólne.

Świat współczesnych finansów jest coraz większym wyzwaniem dla społeczeństwa. Katolicka nauka społeczna dostrzega liczne problemy obecne w tym obszarze, stąd pojawiające się diagnozy przestrzegające przed skutkami porzucenia w ekonomii wymagań etycznych. Szczególnie cennym w tym obszarze jest watykański dokument Oeconomicae et pecuniariae quaestiones wydanym przez Kongregację Nauki Wiary i Dykasterię ds. Integralnego Rozwoju Człowieka 17.05.2018 roku. Wśród wymienionych tam poważnych problemów dotykających finanse XXI wieku wymieniono: proces odrywania się finansów od realnej gospodarki, niemoralne praktyki finansowe i podatkowe oraz zagrożenia związane z narastającym procesem globalizacji. Każde z tych zagadnień wymaga wzmożonej uwagi społeczno-politycznej w świetle zasad właściwej antropologii. Ta ostatnia musi cenić godność człowieka oraz wartość prawdy zakorzenionej w miłości, wyżej niż perspektywy oczekiwanych zysków finansowych.

Parental instructions of Wacław Rzewuski for his son Seweryn and daughters from the years 1754 and 1763/64 The education of younger generations had long and rich traditions in the old Polish aristocratic Rzewuski family. The domestic and foreign education of sons in particular played a major role in building the power and social position of the family. The main purpose of this article is to present hitherto unknown sources on the history of the education of members of this family. Between 1754 and 1763 (or 1764) four instructions have survived, written by Wacław Rzewuski for his son Seweryn and two daughters: Teresa Karolina and Ludwika Maria Róża. The first instruction for Seweryn Rzewuski comes from the period of his studies in Warsaw (1754), when the young magnate attended the college of Theatines. In this piece of writing, the father gives detailed instructions on the civic education for his son. This instruction contains advice on how to behave properly during social gatherings and religious ceremonies. It also refers to the rules of the moral education of the young boy. The second instruction for Seweryn contains advice on the protection of the family residences in Podhorce and Olesko and was associated with the political situation in which Waclaw Rzewuski and his sons lived in the years from 1763-1764. However, the two instructions for his daughters are a real rarity. Wacław Rzewuski paid great attention to their security and safety and very good presence. One of the instructions was devoted to the conditions and circumstances for short journeys by the daughters to a nearby church or monastery. In particular, it concerns the staff of the daughters' traveller suite. Another talks about being cautious with fire during their stay in the palace in Podhorce. Z punktu widzenia rynku pracy i gospodarki w ogóle rok 2021 wyraźnie różni się od ostatnich kilku lat. Najważniejszym tego powodem jest zniesienie ograniczeń wprowadzonych w związku z pandemią wywołaną przez wirus SARS‑CoV–2. Jednym ze skutków serii obostrzeń było pogorszenie sytuacji na rynku pracy, który również powoli zaczął się odtwarzać. W niniejszym artykule postanowiliśmy przybliżyć sytuację na rynku pracy makroregionu centralnego w Polsce w 2021 roku oraz zbadać efektywność działań podejmowanych w celu ograniczenia bezrobocia przez powiatowe urzędy pracy na wspomnianym obszarze. Badanie efektywności zostało przeprowadzone za pomocą modelu DEA, uwzględniającego niekontrolowalne wyniki. Następnie oceniono istotność i siłę wpływu zmiennych opisujących regionalne uwarunkowania na wskaźnik efektywności z modelu DEA za pomocą modelu tobitowego. Dane pochodziły z wojewódzkich i powiatowych urzędów pracy, GUS‑u oraz Ministerstwa Rodziny i Polityki Społecznej.
Przeprowadzone badanie wykazało, że w 2021 roku – w porównaniu z rokiem 2020 – sytuacja na rynku pracy się poprawiła. W makroregionie centralnym zaczęło spadać bezrobocie, choć zmiany te nie przebiegały jednakowo we wszystkich powiatach. Tylko jedna piąta powiatowych urzędów pracy w optymalny sposób przekształcała nakłady w wyniki. W pozostałych urzędach często występowała bardzo silna efektywność. Model tobitowy wskazał, które zmienne w istotny sposób wpływają na efektywność powiatowych urzędów pracy.
Zdaniem autorów nieefektywność urzędów pracy nie wynika wyłącznie ze stosowanych przez nie rozwiązań. Po ustąpieniu pandemii na rynku pracy dały się zaobserwować niekorzystne zjawiska, na które urzędy mają znikomy lub wręcz żaden wpływ. Zaliczamy do nich duży wzrost udziału długotrwale bezrobotnych w ogólnej liczbie bezrobotnych oraz dużą liczbę osób, które wielokrotnie rejestrują się jako bezrobotni. Ta grupa dobrowolnie bezrobotnych rzadko jest zainteresowana skierowanymi do nich działaniami powiatowych urzędów pracy.

In seinem Buch geht es am Rand auch um Beispiele von Pandemien oder Krankheiten wie der Spanischen Grippe, Zika oder Cholera, doch hauptsächlich wird die These erläutert, welche Gemeinsamkeiten es zwischen so unterschiedlichen Begriffen wie z.B. Fake News, Computerviren oder Verbreitung von Schusswaffengewalt gibt. Dabei werden die Kurven von Ausbruch, Verlauf, Höhepunkt, Abflachung und ggfs. Wiederholung untersucht. (3)

BACKGROUND: In most countries, contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases are asked to quarantine for 14 days after exposure to limit asymptomatic onward transmission. While theoretically effective, this policy places a substantial social and economic burden on both the individual and wider society, which might result in low adherence and reduced policy effectiveness. We aimed to assess the merit of testing contacts to avert onward transmission and to replace or reduce the length of quarantine for uninfected contacts. METHODS: We used an agent-based model to simulate the viral load dynamics of exposed contacts, and their potential for onward transmission in different quarantine and testing strategies. We compared the performance of quarantines of differing durations, testing with either PCR or lateral flow antigen (LFA) tests at the end of quarantine, and daily LFA testing without quarantine, against the current 14-day quarantine strategy. We also investigated the effect of contact tracing delays and adherence to both quarantine and self-isolation on the effectiveness of each strategy. FINDINGS: Assuming moderate levels of adherence to quarantine and self-isolation, self-isolation on symptom onset alone can prevent 37% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 12-56) of onward transmission potential from secondary cases. 14 days of post-exposure quarantine reduces transmission by 59% (95% UI 28-79). Quarantine with release after a negative PCR test 7 days after exposure might avert a similar proportion (54%, 95% UI 31-81; risk ratio [RR] 0·94, 95% UI 0·62-1·24) to that of the 14-day quarantine period, as would quarantine with a negative LFA test 7 days after exposure (50%, 95% UI 28-77; RR 0·88, 0·66-1·11) or daily testing without quarantine for 5 days after tracing (50%, 95% UI 23-81; RR 0·88, 0·60-1·43) if all tests are returned negative. A stronger effect might be possible if individuals isolate more strictly after a positive test and if contacts can be notified faster. INTERPRETATION: Testing might allow for a substantial reduction in the length of, or replacement of, quarantine with a small excess in transmission risk. Decreasing test and trace delays and increasing adherence will further increase the effectiveness of these strategies. Further research is required to empirically evaluate the potential costs (increased transmission risk, false reassurance) and benefits (reduction in the burden of quarantine, increased adherence) of such strategies before adoption as policy. The Democratic Republic of the Congo has experienced the most outbreaks of Ebola virus disease since the virus' discovery in 1976. This article provides for the first time a description and a line list for all outbreaks in this country, comprising 996 cases. Compared to patients over 15 years old, the odds of dying were significantly lower in patients aged 5 to 15 and higher in children under five (with 100% mortality in those under 2 years old). The odds of dying increased by 11% per day that a patient was not hospitalised. Outbreaks with an initially high reproduction number, R (>3), were rapidly brought under control, whilst outbreaks with a lower initial R caused longer and generally larger outbreaks. These findings can inform the choice of target age groups for interventions and highlight the importance of both reducing the delay between symptom onset and hospitalisation and rapid national and international response.

In zwölf Beiträgen von Archäologen und Historikern der Nikolaus-Kopernikus-Universität Torun spiegelt sich die Komplexität und Vielschichtigkeit dieser Problematik. Damit bilden sie den Auftakt einer neuen Schriftenreihe, die als ein Forum für den Austausch über die neueste wissenschaftliche Forschung zur Geschichte Polens im weit verstandenen mitteleuropäischen Kontext dient. In den jährlich erscheinenden Bänden werden komplexe Themen der Geschichte untersucht. This volume not only focusses on issues on mutual exchange but also on ethnic, cultural and religious ties of the Middle European countries and their citizens. The twelve contributions of archaeologists and historians from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń reflect the complexity of this issue. The authors therefore kick off a new series of journals which serve as a forum for the exchange on recent research on the history of Poland in the wider sense of the Middle European context. The annually published volume will analyse complex subjects of history.

BACKGROUND: Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes reduce dengue virus transmission, and city-wide releases in Yogyakarta city, Indonesia, are showing promising entomological results. Accurate estimates of the burden of dengue, its spatial distribution and the potential impact of Wolbachia are critical in guiding funder and government decisions on its future wider use. METHODS: Here, we combine multiple modelling methods for burden estimation to predict national case burden disaggregated by severity and map the distribution of burden across the country using three separate data sources. An ensemble of transmission models then predicts the estimated reduction in dengue transmission following a nationwide roll-out of wMel Wolbachia. RESULTS: We estimate that 7.8 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 1.8-17.7 million) symptomatic dengue cases occurred in Indonesia in 2015 and were associated with 332,865 (UI 94,175-754,203) lost disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). The majority of dengue's burden was due to non-severe cases that did not seek treatment or were challenging to diagnose in outpatient settings leading to substantial underreporting. Estimated burden was highly concentrated in a small number of large cities with 90% of dengue cases occurring in 15.3% of land area. Implementing a nationwide Wolbachia population replacement programme was estimated to avert 86.2% (UI 36.2-99.9%) of cases over a long-term average. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest interventions targeted to the highest burden cities can have a disproportionate impact on dengue burden. Area-wide interventions, such as Wolbachia, that are deployed based on the area covered could protect people more efficiently than individual-based interventions, such as vaccines, in such dense environments.
