The paper is devoted to the analysis of Evgeny Frantsevich Shmurlo's views on the process of political and legal formation of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The research is based on the analysis of pre-revolutionary and modern Russian historiography, as well as the fundamental work of the historian "The Course of Russian History". As a result, the authors conclude that E.F. Shmurlo's actual presentation of the material is based on the concepts of historians from the pre-revolutionary school, especially M.K. Lyubavskiy, while the events assessments are largely based on M.O. Koyalovich's concepts and approaches. The authors of the paper note that the interpretation of the events related to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Crown of Poland's unification is expressed in the term by which the researcher designates this process, namely "incorporation".
