Pearl S. Buck's novel The Mother provides a glimpse of pre-revolutionary China and status of women in that society. She through her novels brings into light that how society influenced the minds of the women turning them into mere slaves and restricting or denying them the freedom and the fulfillment of their desires. The sexual morality of a woman was a main concern or issue that the Confucius society of China imposed upon on them. It proposed certain codes and conduct of behavior which were to be strictly followed by all women that included the virtues of silence, patience, humility, obedience and chastity. In a male dominated society like China, women were deprived of all social, political and legal rights and were often rendered as weak, inferior and worthless creatures. The present research paper undertakes the study of this novel which deals with the feminine oppression and marginalization in a feudal society and the deep rooted cult of feminine chastity among the Chinese through the story of her nameless protagonist 'the mother.' The chastity of women was a prime focus in Chinese culture and whatever the circumstances were she had to live up to that. Buck through this novel gives the universal portrait of the eternal mother who lives through her loneliness, despair and frustration.

AbstractLinguistic intuitionistic fuzzy set (LIFS) is an efficient theory to represent the data in form of membership degrees in a qualitative rather than the quantitative aspects. But in sometimes, it is preferable by the decision‐maker to give their preferences in terms of interval numbers rather than real numbers. To address this, the present manuscript extends the theory of LIFS to linguistic interval‐valued intuitionistic fuzzy set (LIVIFS) by expressing the degrees of membership and non‐membership by the interval‐valued linguistic terms. Under this environment, some measures of distances have been proposed to measuring the uncertainties in the data. The characteristics and their desirable relations have also been stated. Further, based on these measures, an extended technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution method has been presented under the LIVIFS environment by different pairs of decision‐makers and their corresponding priority levels. The study has been validated through a numerical example.

Abstract

Aim
To determine the effectiveness of individual-based, nurse-delivered, on-campus screening and brief intervention (SBI) for hazardous alcohol use among college students.


Methods
It was a parallel-design, double-blind, randomized controlled trial. Out of 793 students screened, 130 met the selection criteria of hazardous alcohol use, defined by alcohol use disorder identification test (AUDIT) score 8–19. Participants were randomly allocated to either SBI or general advice group. Both interventions were delivered by one specially trained nurse. Outcome was assessed after 3 months. Primary outcome was the change in the mean AUDIT score and the secondary outcome was difference in the proportion of students transited from the high- to low-risk category of AUDIT. General linear model with repeated measures and logistic regression were used to determine the primary and secondary outcome, respectively.


Results
Majority (80.7%) of the participants were men. Among all the baseline demography and clinical characteristics, only family history of alcohol use was significantly different in the groups. Intention to treat analysis showed a significant but small effect (0.16) of SBI on the mean AUDIT score. Gender did not moderate the effect. SBI was also observed to have a significant effect (adjusted odds ratio 3.7 95% CI 1.529–8.850) on shifting the students from high- to low-risk AUDIT zone.


Conclusion
SBI among college students is acceptable and has a small but significant effect on alcohol use. In countries like India, where despite the increasing magnitude of hazardous drinking in students no formal system exists to deal with the problem, SBI might be useful.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a simple risk scores chart to estimate the probability of poor outcomes in patients with severe head injury (HI). DESIGN: Retrospective. SETTING: Level-1, government-funded trauma centre, India. PARTICIPANTS: Patients with severe HI admitted to the neurosurgery intensive care unit during 19 May 2010–31 December 2011 (n=946) for the model development and further, data from same centre with same inclusion criteria from 1 January 2012 to 31 July 2012 (n=284) for the external validation of the model. OUTCOME(S): In-hospital mortality and unfavourable outcome at 6 months. RESULTS: A total of 39.5% and 70.7% had in-hospital mortality and unfavourable outcome, respectively, in the development data set. The multivariable logistic regression analysis of routinely collected admission characteristics revealed that for in-hospital mortality, age (51–60, >60 years), motor score (1, 2, 4), pupillary reactivity (none), presence of hypotension, basal cistern effaced, traumatic subarachnoid haemorrhage/intraventricular haematoma and for unfavourable outcome, age (41–50, 51–60, >60 years), motor score (1–4), pupillary reactivity (none, one), unequal limb movement, presence of hypotension were the independent predictors as its 95% confidence interval (CI) of odds ratio (OR)_did not contain one. The discriminative ability (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (95% CI)) of the score chart for in-hospital mortality and 6 months outcome was excellent in the development data set (0.890 (0.867 to 912) and 0.894 (0.869 to 0.918), respectively), internal validation data set using bootstrap resampling method (0.889 (0.867 to 909) and 0.893 (0.867 to 0.915), respectively) and external validation data set (0.871 (0.825 to 916) and 0.887 (0.842 to 0.932), respectively). Calibration showed good agreement between observed outcome rates and predicted risks in development and external validation data set (p>0.05).
