- Business model modeling languages (BMMLs) are an important approach for promoting business model idea generation. The papers of this dissertation address five major limitations that characterize the corresponding research field: A lack of consolidation, of theoretical grounding, of empirical evaluation, and of functionality of existing software tools concerning idea generation as well as idea evaluation. The first paper of the dissertation, John and Kundisch (2017a), is a literature review that provides a comprehensive identification of BMMLs, a classification framework, and a research agenda. The second paper, John and Kundisch (2015) provides a behavioral theory that explains the relationship between visual templates and the creativity of the users of such templates. The third paper, John and Kundisch (2017b), provides a design theory that explains the relationship between the Business Model Canvas visual template and the creativity of the template users. Moreover, it provides preliminary evidence in favor of the proposed design theory and methodological advice for the evaluation of BMMLs. The fourth paper, John (2016), provides a design theory that describes the architecture of business model idea generators and explicates the role that BMMLs can play in the context of such idea generators. The fifth paper, Kundisch & John (2012), provides an extension of the e3-value BMML, with the extension being grounded in real options theory.
- Many firms are operating in highly competitive and globally interconnected business environments where IT is a key enabler of success in many organizations. Thus, the ability to harness IT efficiently in order to support, enable, and implement changes in crucial business processes has become a critical success factor in those environments. Many companies experience a substantial increase in the number of IT projects they have to face. Managing the increasing number of IT projects constitutes major challenges for the affected companies. Under the term Project Portfolio Management (PPM), numerous approaches and frameworks can be found in the literature, which provide guidance for handling these types of challenges. The main goal of this thesis is to contribute to the knowledge base on IT PPM by thoroughly investigating a crucial, but nevertheless often neglected aspect of IT PPM: project interactions. This dissertation proposes a common ground for an in-depth discussion of project interactions in the context of IT project portfolios. It comprises five articles that build upon the current body of knowledge, define different types of interactions in IT project portfolios, and highlight several important issues arising from the inadequate treatment of these interactions. This thesis contributes to the literature by providing the necessary concepts and tools to improve on the identification and consideration of interactions in IT PPM.

- As of today, paid search is one of the most popular online advertising instruments. As such, paid search has received a high degree of scholarly interest especially in the fields of Information Systems and Marketing. However, despite this high level of scholarly attention, the current body of literature primarily analyses the impact of paid search on purchases made via the online channel. Surprisingly, the current literature lacks any research on bricks-and-mortar retailers who sell their products solely via their local stores and invest in paid search to reach consumers during their search phase. Considering that bricks-and-mortar retailers still represent one third of all retailers, this represents a blatant gap in the literature. Accordingly, the main goal of this dissertation is to enhance understanding of how bricks-and-mortar retailers should approach paid search. This dissertation comprises six research papers. First, I assess the current state of the literature in a systematic literature review in regard to paid search, from which I derive empirical generalizations to outline a future research agenda (Schlangenotto et al. 2018a). Based on this review, the subsequent five empirical papers focus on the main decisions that every bricks-and-mortar retailer faces when approaching paid search. Each paper explores one of the core questions, respectively, whether bricks-and-mortar retailers should invest in paid search (Schlangenotto et al. 2018b; Schlangenotto 2018), which search requests they should buy (Schlangenotto and Kundisch 2017), where they should place their ads on a SERP (Schlangenotto et al. 2017) and how they should phrase their ads (Schlangenotto and Kundisch 2016).

Heath et al. [Heath C, Larrick RP, Wu G (1999) Goals as reference points. Cognitive Psych. 38(1):79–109] propose a prospect theory model for goal behavior. Their analytical model is based on the assumption that goals inherit the main properties of the prospect theory value function, i.e., reference point dependence, loss aversion, and diminishing sensitivity. We investigate whether these main properties transfer to goal behavior in the field. We take user activity data from a gamified question and answer (Q&A) community and analyze how users adjust their contribution behavior in the days surrounding goal achievement, where goals are represented by badges. We find that users gradually increase their performance in the days prior to earning a badge, with performance peaking on the day of the promotion. In subsequent days, user performance gradually diminishes again, with the decline being strongest on the day immediately following the badge achievement. These findings reflect the characteristic S-shape of the prospect theory value function which is convex below the reference point and concave above it. Employing the target-based approach, we can interpret the value function as a cumulative density function of a unimodal probability distribution. Our results suggest that it is more likely that active members of the community focus on the next badge relative to the status already achieved, as their next goal and are less likely to focus on more remote (higher-ranked) badges. Our results thus support the transferability of the main properties of the prospect theory value function to goal behavior in the field and suggest a distinct shape of the value function around goals.
