After 1204, the Byzantine Empire lost control over the Eastern Mediterranean. The restoration of the Empire in 1261, however, did not recover its sea dominance. The Latins, especially the Venetians and the Genoese, who had possessions in the Aegean and the Black Seas and conducted active maritime trade there, established themselves in the region. The importance of sea routes for Byzantium increased dramatically given the territorial dispersion of the Byzantine possessions, the high activity of Europeans in the region, and the growing threat of an Ottoman conquest.This article analyses the specifics of Byzantine sea communications and their role in the fate of the Empire during the period of geopolitical changes between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Based on written sources, the author examines the condition of the Byzantine fleet, the role of foreigners in ensuring movement within and outside the Empire, and the meaning of the sea communication during the Ottoman sieges of Byzantine cities.The author reveals that the Empire could not provide stable and regular sea contacts between separate parts of its territories and external relations with the West on its own. The decline of the fleet and the lack of material resources forced the Byzantines to use foreign ships as means of transportation. The Italians, especially the Venetians, provided transport to the Byzantine emperors and diplomats who made official trips to the West, transported people and goods within the region, and provided food for the inhabitants of besieged cities. It is concluded that the transport dependence of Byzantium on the Italian maritime republics testified to its economic and political weakness. The loss of control over the sea routes in the Eastern Mediterranean and the degradation of its own transport system contributed to the decline and fall of Byzantium in 1453. ; После 1204 г. Византийская империя утратила контроль над Восточным Средиземноморьем. Восстановление государственности в 1261 г., тем не менее, не вернуло ей господство на морях. В регионе утвердились латиняне, прежде всего венецианцы и генуэзцы, которые имели владения в Эгеиде и Черном море и вели здесь активную морскую торговлю. В условиях территориальной разобщенности византийских владений, высокой активности в регионе европейцев и растущей угрозы османских завоеваний для Византии резко возрастало значение морских путей.Данная статья посвящена анализу специфики византийских морских коммуникаций и их роли в судьбе империи в период геополитических перемен XIV–XV вв. Основываясь на письменных источниках, автор статьи рассматривает состояние византийского флота, роль иностранцев в обеспечении перемещений внутри империи и за ее пределы, значение морского сообщения в периоды турецких осад византийских городов.Выявлено, что империя не могла собственными силами обеспечить устойчивые и регулярные морские контакты между отдельными частями своих владений и внешние связи с Западом. Упадок флота и недостаток материальных ресурсов вынуждали византийцев использовать в качестве транспортных средств иностранные суда. Итальянцы, прежде всего венецианцы, предоставляли корабли византийским императорам и дипломатам, совершавшим официальные поездки на Запад, осуществляли перевозку внутри региона людей и товаров, обеспечивали продовольствием жителей осажденных городов. Делается вывод, что транспортная зависимость Византии от итальянских морских республик обнаруживала ее экономическую и политическую слабость. Утрата контроля над морскими путями в Восточном Средиземноморье и деградация собственной системы транспортного сообщения способствовали упадку и падению Византии в 1453 г.

This paper commemorates Margarita Adol'fovna Poljakovskaja (1933–2020), the head of the Ural school of Byzantine studies and the respected authority in the history and culture of late Byzantium. The author makes the reader acquainted with Professor Poljakovskaja's academic biography, the topics of her researches, and the results of her studies in various aspects of the Byzantine history from the thirteenth to fifteenth century. The paper has revealed a few key topics studied by Professor Poljakovskaja: monastic properties in late Byzantine cities; Byzantine rhetoric and epistolography; social and political thought; intellectual life; social structures in the Byzantine society; palace ceremonies and court culture; and the Byzantines' emotional world and daily life. It has been stated that although Professor Poljakovskaja used abundant and varied methodology produced by historical and philological researches, she preferred the anthropological approach. Her attention concentrated on a person and the person's notion of the time and self. Reconstructions of intellectual and social life in the period of decline of the Byzantine empire loomed large in the historian's studies, and the key topic of her researches was the problem of the "person, society, and power". ; Статья посвящена памяти Маргариты Адольфовны Поляковской (1933–2020), главы Уральской школы византиноведения, признанного специалиста по истории и культуре поздней Византии. Автор знакомит читателя с научной биографией профессора Поляковской, тематикой ее работ и результатами ее исследований различных аспектов византийской истории XIII–XV вв. Выделяются несколько ключевых тем, которые разрабатывала М. А. Поляковская: монастырские владения в поздневизантийских городах, византийская риторика и эпистолография, общественно-политическая мысль, интеллектуальная жизнь, социальные структуры византийского общества, дворцовый церемониал и придворная культура, эмоциональный мир византийцев и повседневность. Отмечается, что М. А. Поляковская использовала богатый и разнообразный методологический инструментарий историко-филологических исследований, отдавая, однако, предпочтение антропологическому подходу. В центре ее внимания находился человек и его представления о времени и окружающем мире. Важное место в работах этого историка отводилось реконструкции интеллектуальной и общественной жизни периода упадка Византийской империи, а центральной темой ее исследований была проблема «человек, общество и власть».

This article considers the history of the campaign of Ottoman Sultan Murad II to Constantinople that failed in 1438. The study is based on the reports of Byzantine historians Georgios Sphrantzes and Sylvestre Syropulos and Castilian traveller Pero Tafur. Based on an analysis of the sources, the author describes the Byzantine-Ottoman relations in the 1430s and defines the role of the Turkish factor in the context of negotiations between Byzantium and the West about the unification of churches. The study de­monstrates that the Ottomans planned an attack on Constantinople in 1438 in order to thwart the Uniate negotiations. The departure of Emperor John VIII Palaiologos to the Council of Ferrara-Florence in November 1437 displeased the sultan, who feared a political rapprochement of the Greeks with Western countries. According to sources, the campaign did not take place, because grand vizier Halil-Pasha convinced the Sultan to abandon this plan. The author of the article suggests that Murad II was stopped from aggression by the agreement with Byzantium, under which the Empire recognised itself as a vassal of the Ottoman sultan, the previous experience of military confrontation with the Greeks, as well as the difficult foreign policy situation in the Balkans. However, the threat of an Ottoman attack on the Byzantine capital influenced the negotiations of the Greek delegation with the papacy. The issue of sending ships to the aid of Constantinople by the papacy and Venice was being actively discussed throughout the year. Even when the issue of providing emergency assistance to the city lost its urgency, he did not leave the political agenda of negotiations at the Council. The Greeks continued to play the "Turkish card" in an effort to make the papacy move from promises to decisive action and demonstrate the political will to provide real military assistance to the Byzantine Empire. ; В статье рассматривается история несостоявшегося в 1438 г. похода османского султана Мурада II на Константинополь. Исследование опирается на сообщения византийских историков Георгия Сфрандзи и Сильвестра Сиропула и кастильского путешественника Перо Тафура. На основе анализа источников автор статьи характеризует византийско-османские отношения в 1430-е гг. и определяет роль турецкого фактора в контексте переговоров Византии с Западом об объединении церквей. Исследование показало, что османы планировали нападение в 1438 г. на Константинополь с целью сорвать эти униатские переговоры. Отъезд императора Иоанна VIII Палеолога на Ферраро-Флорентийский собор в ноябре 1437 г. вызвал недовольство султана, который опасался политического сближения греков с западными странами. Согласно источникам, поход не состоялся, так как великий визирь Халил-паша убедил султана отказаться от этого плана. Автор статьи предполагает, что Мурада II останавливали от агрессии заключенное с Византией соглашение, по которому империя признала себя вассалом османского султана, прежний опыт военного противостояния с греками, а также сложная внешне­политическая ситуация на Балканах. This review analyses the new research of the 'Epirus model' of Byzantine statehood, the structure and political behaviour of the local ruling class. The reviewer emphases the topicality of the issue in question, concerning the history of the Despotate of Epirus, as well as the substantial source basis. She also underlines the importance of the prosopographic analysis conducted which helped reveal the structure of the ruling class of Epirus. The book under review focuses on the factors of consolidation between the clergy and members of local and newly come aristocracy close to the Doukai-Komnenoi dynasty, reasons for the stabilisation of the internal political situation in Epirus, and the principles of legitimation of the governor's power. Special attention is paid to the author's idea about the rallying of political elite at the initial stage of the Epirus state formation and its subsequent deconsolidation. The reviewer singles out some debatable issues connected with the study of the political history of the Despotate of Epirus. ; В рецензии анализируется новый опыт изучения «эпирского варианта» византийской государственности, структуры и политического поведения местного правящего класса. Указана актуальность избираемой исследователем тематики в рамках изучения истории Эпирского деспотата и репрезентативность источниковой базы. Подчеркнута важность проведенного просопографического исследования, позволившего выявить состав правящего класса Эпира. Отмечаются факторы консолидации духовенства и представителей местной и пришлой аристократии вокруг династии Дук-Комнинов, причины стабилизации внутриполитической ситуации в Эпире, принципы легитимации власти правителей. Особое внимание уделяется идее автора о сплочении политической элиты на начальном этапе формирования Эпирского государства и последующей ее деконсолидации. Выделены некоторые дискуссионные вопросы, связанные с изучением политической истории Эпирского царства.
