Identification and strategic characterisation of medium-sized Iberian towns and conurbations ; Identificación y caracterización estratégica de las ciudades y aglomeraciones medias ibéricas
The paper studies medium-sized towns and agglomerations in the ambit of the Iberian urbansystems and border areas, first by identifying and delimiting these urban units by population size(50,000–500,000) and the maximum threshold distance between urban areas and settlements (1 km, asmeasured by the application Google Earth). This results in nearly a hundred urban areas that are not partof metropolitan areas, with the different morphologies of compact conurbations, urban areas, nonmetropolitanagglomerations and city corridors. Secondly, following a hierarchical order, a functionalclassification into three types is carried out: capital cities with a definite politico-administrative functionand centrality, head towns with a function that is to some degree diversified and local centres with arelative agricultural or industrial base, coastal resorts and corridors. These types lead to the coreanalysis of the way in which each agglomeration is characterised in terms of its position in the networkof town, urban dynamics, potential and limitations and recent urban strategies. Finally, comments aremade on the results obtained from the research with regard to urban systems and strategies.

Small Cities and Conurbations in the Iberian Peninsula: Identification, Dynamics and Strategies ; Las pequeñas ciudades y aglomeraciones ibéricas: identificación, dinámicas y estrategias
This paper is a continuation of two previous publications on large and medium-sized cities inthe Iberian Peninsula's urban system, considering the cities and conurbations at a basic level in Spain,Portugal and Andorra. With this objective, the study has been based on statistical indicators, reports andmonographs, the application of Google Earth images and multiple field visits. The core content analysesterminology that is the subject constant debate and the thresholds of this urban level; its identificationand characterisation in terms of the types of political capital, district seats, market towns, border towns, industrial towns and tourist resorts, as well as a number of development challenges and strategies. Thepaper concludes prospectively by addressing the scenarios of the urban system and the role that smallcities may play in the organisation of the polycentric European city system.

; ABSTRACT: The aim is to reflect upon new transport infrastructures in upland areas of the Iberian Peninsula. There will be a review some of the concepts relating to land transport and to mountainous areas, followed by consideration of the repercussions of the siting of transport routes and corridors. Particular attention will be given to the sub-regional zones of the Spanish slopes of the Pyrenees, a physical and political frontier, and to the inland, Castilian and Leonese side of the Cantabrian mountain range, likewise a geographical and political boundary. To conclude, consideration will be given to prospects in the current situation of economic crisis.
