; The enemy's image can be socially constructed on the level of single persons, political parties or whole country. This distortion propaganda targets the enemy's portrayal to emphatically de-cline the stances and the positions of a given political opponent. Linguistically, the enemy's image construction can be formed in various ways depending on the emotional engagement of the speaker: These forms varies from just negative evaluations to profound contempt and hate speech. This article examines this phenomenon in some historical documents concerning the outbreak of the World War 1.

; The aim of the article is not to confirm, to refute or to relativize the statement of the (sole) responsibility of Germany for provoking the First World War. The paper will, above all, focus on some methods or strategies which have been used in the early days of August 1914 in order to reach a general consensus in the German Empire (the so-called Burgfrieden), to ensure, in this way, the approval of the war loans in the Reichstag and to convince the public that the intended military solution would be the only way forward. The analysis will be based on some political speeches (of the German Emperor Wilhelm II and the parliamentary debate); the description is completed by a small selection of French statements. ; Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu "Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia". Abstract
With his "Structural Text Analysis" M. Titzmann tries to give the basic notions of a semiotic theory of interpretation. In spite of this extensive and systematic representation, some problems arise: the additive conception of pragmatics, the static-referential notion of sign, the rigid definition of meaning, the rejection of any alternative interpretation. The possibility of application of the proposed method would depend to a large extent on these points.

; The article analyses two speeches commemorating the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War, delivered by the German President Frank Walter Steinmeier and the Polish President Andrzej Duda. The authors examine the two texts and ask what aspects of World War II the politicians evoke in their speeches, what images of the Self and the Other are created and what goals are pursued. In the beginning, the article outlines the different meanings of World War II in Polish and German collective memory, and then it proceeds to briefly characterise the commemorative speech as a type of speech. A special emphasis is placed on the analysis of the perspectives underlying the speeches, including the theses presented, as well as on the comparison of the most important differences.
