The Biological and Sociological Mechanisms of Aggression
In: International social science journal: ISSJ, Band 30, Heft 4, S. 727-749
ISSN: 0020-8701
Aggression is defined as the quantity of kinetic energy capable of accelerating a given system's tendency towards entropy. Examined here is the relationship between ecological situations & the nervous system's responses to them. After reviewing the major laws of modern biology, a schematic approach is made to the functional significance of the higher nerve centers. This schematization permits a neurophysiological & biochemical description of satisfaction-seeking drives that act on the environment in an attempt to be gratified. From there the path from biology to sociology, individual to society, is delineated, & various forms of aggression studied. The biochemical, neurophysiological, behavioral & environmental components of defensive & irritability aggression are given equal emphasis; iterated is the observation that every general law of behavior applied to the individual is also applicable at the level of organized social groups. The holistic understanding of mechanisms of aggression, acquired within the last several years, should permit an evolution of attitudes in this area: social science must devote serious attention to those human impulses which result in the domination of individuals, groups & nations.
