This paper aims to analyze the meaning of the ideas of 'democracy' and 'humanities' according to Thomas Aquinas. In particular, some parts of his De Regno ad Regem Cypri will be considered. Questions such as the correct interpretation of individual responsibility in social action, the uniform application of the law or the role of the state in the organisation of private associations are just some of the critical issues that have not yet been answered by the passage of centuries and ideologies. And the shift from monocratic to democratic forms of government, especially in Western culture, has not helped to resolve these questions. Trying to understand how some moments in the history of thought have contributed to deal with these critical issues and thus to try to make the humanities useful for the development of democracies and to protect the individual in society, is the aim of this contribution through Thomas Aquinas.

This contibution aims to understand the concept of human dignity in Francisco Suarez, S.J., especialli in his commentaries to the De Ultimo Fine Hominis and De Bonitate et Malitia by Thomas Aquinas. Through Suarez words, it is possible to understand what are the responsibilities of human being in the world and how she/he may exercise powers and will in the prepolitical and politica spheres.

Recent research has challenged our view of the Abrahamic religious traditions as unilaterally intolerant and incapable of recognizing otherness in all its diversity and richness; but a diachronic and comparative study of how these traditions deal with otherness is yet to appear. This volume aims to contribute to such a study by presenting different treatments of otherness in medieval and early modern thought. Part I: Altruism deals with attitudes and behaviors that benefit others, regardless of its motives. We deal with the social rights and emotions as well as the moral obligations that the very existence of other human beings, whatever their characteristics, creates for a community. Part II: Religious recognition and toleration considers identity, toleration and mutual recognition created by the existence of religious or ethnic otherness in a given social, religious or political community. Part III: Evil deals with religious otherness that is considered evil and rejected such as heretics and malevolent, demonic entities. The volume will ultimately inform the reader on the nature of religious toleration (including beliefs and doctrines, even emotions) as well as of the self-definition of religious communities when encountering and defining otherness in different ways.--
