Abstract
As the ecological crisis grows more intense, youth research must attune itself to the ongoing climate emergency marked by mass extinction, the era of pandemics and world political turmoil. How can youth research participate in finding solutions to the dilemmas involved in achieving sustainable development and the well-being of all living things and beings, and of the planet itself? This article presents a new framework for youth research: planetary youth research. It is structured in accordance with the four pillars of the 'global ethical framework' outlined by the Club of Rome in 1974 in its second report, Mankind at the Turning Point: 1) One must learn to identify with future generations; 2) A universal consciousness must be created; 3) Humanity's relationship with nature should be based on harmony; and 4) A new ethic for the use of raw materials must be created. This article outlines a new framework for planetary youth research by expanding and updating these historical pillars through the application of current trends and findings in youth research and social science research.

The aims of this article are threefold. First, the article draws a general picture of the young people acting in transnational political events in diverse ways, in order to show how the local poor and minority youth are often left aside in both the events and the research reports, even when they participate in large numbers at the event site. Second, the concepts of cosmopolitanism, emancipation and freedom are used here to formulate a concept of cosmopolitan emancipation. Third, this concept is applied in two case studies of local poor and minority youth and their participation in transnational political events, a form of participation understood here as representing concrete practices of transnational democracy. Concrete case analyses from the World Social Forum Nairobi 2007 are conducted in order to discuss how the 'contact zones' may provide a basis for cosmopolitan emancipation among the local poor and minority youth. In addition, this article discusses how researchers are able to grasp cosmopolitically emancipating moments when they place themselves in this kind of contact zone. Adapted from the source document.

This chapter examines the youth cultural circuits and the institutional channels of political participation in five Arab Mediterranean countries: Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and Lebanon. Through the triangulation of the data from the SAHWA Youth Survey 2016 (2017) and the SAHWA Ethnographic Fieldwork 2015 (2016), the experiences of political participation of the Arab Mediterranean youth in the "post-Arab Spring era" are analysed. The data - analysed with the application of the theory of chronotopes developed by the linguist Mikhail Bakhtin - show that generation gaps exist in participation and political dialogue. The "time-spaces" in which the capacities for youth agency can prosper are the physical and virtual streets, as well as the coffee shops, which can also allow them to build an identity outside tradition, authority and the family (i.e. the older generations). ; Peer reviewed

This article studies the blogging activism of two young, educated women who grew up in societies that emphasize traditional values. Through their blogging activities, these females embody a space for identity creation and recovery, and challenge the obedience to gender norms, authority, and religion in their home cultures. Though coming from two different societies (Tunisia and Vietnam), both subjects identify themselves within a global citizenship framework through their everyday life and blogging that emphasizes connection, harmony, and respect for diversity. The method of this study is a combination of autoethnography, ethnography and blog research, transforming the researcher also into the subject of analysis. Personal experiences and life stories of the author are analysed in conjunction with data provided by the informant. The data includes personal blogs, writings, drawings, interviews and collective discus-sions, which provide an intimate approach to the inner life of the study subjects. Through our analysis we conclude that the blogging may open new political spaces for culturally oppressed differences and become a practical space for girls to exercise their own control of self-representation. Girls who have difficulties in being heard or acknowledge in their everyday circumstances may create new types of expressions and ac-tivism through their blogging activity, where they find new belonging and strengthen their identity for-mation

In this article, we use a multidimensional approach to empirically study the concepts of dialogue and contact zones in the setting of the World Social Forum Tunis 2013, with a special emphasis on young, local volunteers. Although young Tunisians played a crucial role in the revolution, they have been side-lined in the construction of the country's new democracy. Furthermore, although many studies have paid attention to the creativity of young activists in the World Social Forum, very few have thoroughly analysed the engagements and experiences of young, local participants. This is surprising, especially since the youth represent one of the biggest groups of participants in World Social Forums. Moreover, many World Social Forum volunteers, the backbone of the forum, are young locals. This article presents a combination of Jabberi's autoethnographic work and Laine's ethnographic work on the World Social Forum Tunis 2013. Using the concepts of de Sousa Santos, the article shows how young World Social Forum volunteers actively produced translations of knowledge and practices that enabled multicultural contact zones that connected the different actors in the forum.

The article has a triple aim. The first aim is to study the structure of EU youth policy, especially the role of the EU Presidency youth events in the EU institution. The EU youth event in Hyvinkää during the Finnish EU Presidency in 2006 was the starting point of our case study. Second, we analyze how the EU Presidency youth events, the case of Hyvinkää in particular, function as tools of political influence in forming EU youth policy. Third, we analyze the Hyvinkää youth event as a democratic miniature society. To show the variety of youth participation in the different political arenas of the EU we bring reflections from the European Youth Forum and the European Youth Parliament to our analysis. The study suggests that in the future the EU Presidency youth events should function as important and versatile arenas of learning-by-doing enabling the growth of 'young active EU policy citizens'.

Faced with the general period of political demobilisation since 2011, there is a need to look beyond the manifest forms of political participation and to better understand the dynamics of engagement among today's Arab Mediterranean youth. In this article, we inquire into the life experiences of young people and, especially, explore the agentic dimensions of their apparent disengagement. What societal processes shape their negative attitudes toward engaging in public political life? What prospects are there for further politicisation of youth in the post-2011 era? In order to address these questions, we adopt a processual view of engagement, indicating that young people's agencies are geared towards the goals of livelihood, employment, and attaining personal advancement and markers of social adulthood. These in turn represent spheres of life that may aggregate instances of felt injustices and thresholds of politicisation processes. ; Peer reviewed
