As the author points out, all of the apparent feats of the large Japanese companies are often not theirs at all, but the work of the several small companies that they exploit. The competitiveness of the Japanese economy is rooted in their pervasive method of single source subcontracting. She (the author) examines the historical tradition of hierarchical structures in Japan, the origin and nature of subcontracting in the nation, and the implications of a practice seemingly contradictory to free-market capitalism in a capitalist state.
