Abstract
Over the past three decades, environmental concerns about the water pollution have been raised on societal and industrial levels. The presence of pollutants stemming from cosmetic products has been documented in wastewater streams outflowing from industrial as well as wastewater treatment plants. To this end, a series of consistent measures should be taken to prevent emerging contaminants of water resources. This need has driven the development of technologies, in an attempt to mitigate their impact on the environment. This work offers a thorough review of existing knowledge on cosmetic wastewater treatment approaches, including, coagulation, dissolved air flotation, adsorption, activated sludge, biodegradation, constructed wetlands, and advanced oxidation processes. Various studies have already documented the appearance of cosmetics in samples retrieved from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which have definitely promoted our comprehension of the path of cosmetics within the treatment cycle; however, there are still multiple blanks to our knowledge. All treatments have, without exception, their own limitations, not only cost-wise, but also in terms of being feasible, effective, practical, reliable, and environmentally friendly.

International audience ; A multiresidue method using gas chromatography with electron impact mass spectrometry in the selected ion monitoring mode [GC-MS(SIM)] has been developed for the quantitative analysis of twenty three widely used pesticides in fresh peaches produced under integrated crop management process (ICM) in order to assess their residues. The proposed methodology involved a sample extraction procedure using liquid-liquid partition with acetonitrile followed by a cleanup step based on solid-phase extraction (SPE). Fortification studies were performed at different concentration levels for various types of peaches that differ in properties such as appearance, flavor and pit. The data showed that the different peach matrixes had no significant effect on the recoveries. The recoveries were greater than 80% for most of the studied pesticides with RSD (%) below 18%. The obtained limits of quantification (LOQs) were in the range 0.002 - 0.050 mg Kg-1, depending on the compound. Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of 104 fruit samples collected under IPM production during cultivation period of 2006, in order to assess the performance of the method with real samples and to determine whether the concentration of pesticides in peaches exceed their maximum residue levels (MRLs). Residues detected were lower than those established by the legislation for all pesticides, except diazinon, that exceed in one positive sample, reaching the value of 0.03 mg Kg−1. Estimated daily intake (EDI) were calculated and compared with acceptable daily intake (ADI) in order to estimate the health risk based on the pesticide exposure.

The presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater was first reported in March 2020. Over the subsequent months, the potential for wastewater surveillance to contribute to COVID-19 mitigation programmes has been the focus of intense national and international research activities, gaining the attention of policy makers and the public. As a new application of an established methodology, focused collaboration between public health practitioners and wastewater researchers is essential to developing a common understanding on how, when and where the outputs of this non-invasive community-level approach can deliver actionable outcomes for public health authorities. Within this context, the NORMAN SCORE "SARS-CoV-2 in sewage" database provides a platform for rapid, open access data sharing, validated by the uploading of 276 data sets from nine countries to-date. Through offering direct access to underpinning meta-data sets (and describing its use in data interpretation), the NORMAN SCORE database is a resource for the development of recommendations on minimum data requirements for wastewater pathogen surveillance. It is also a tool to engage public health practitioners in discussions on use of the approach, providing an opportunity to build mutual understanding of the demand and supply for data and facilitate the translation of this promising research application into public health practice. ; All authors wish to thank the WWTP operators for providing samples.
