The association of demographic, socioeconomic, and attitudinal factors with children's cycle‐helmet use was investigated using self‐reported data from 9775 children aged 8–12 in England, where there are currently no legal requirements that cyclists (of any age) wear helmets. The results suggest that demographic factors, socioeconomic status, and attitudes influence whether children wear bicycle helmets but that attitudinal factors are most important.
HARDY und BRYMAN präsentieren in dem Handbook of Data Analysis qualitative und quantitative Untersuchungsmethoden. Dabei werden in den jeweiligen Kapiteln die einzelnen Verfahren(sfamilien) getrennt dargeboten, Möglichkeiten einer gemeinsamen Diskussion bleiben zumeist ungenutzt. Die Kapitel selbst überzeugen durch ihre Qualität; Forschende und Studierende werden viele nützliche Hinweise finden, wobei der Kauf des Buches angesichts seines Preises eher für Bibliotheken als auch Einzelpersonen attraktiv sein wird.
Wenn wir davon ausgehen, dass es "härtere" und "weichere" Formen qualitativer Forschung gibt, dann müssen wir Valerie J. JANESICK's Buch sicherlich zu den eher "weichen" Formen rechnen. JANESICK betont die Wichtigkeit von Fantasie, Kreativität, und Offenheit. Die hierbei vorgestellten mentalen "Stretchingübungen" wenden sich an diejenigen Leser und Leserinnen, die ihre Forschungsarbeit und andere Bereiche ihres Lebens verknüpft sehen. Die Analogien, die JANESICK zwischen Yoga, Tanz und qualitativer Forschung herstellt, können inspirierend wirken, aber auch Befremden bei denjenigen auslösen, die nichts von künstlerischen Ansätzen in der Forschung halten.
Das hier besprochene Buch behandelt auf gründliche und durchdachte Weise sehr grundsätzliche Fragen qualitativer Methodik. Mit Blick auf eine Leserschaft, die eigene Forschungsarbeiten plant, untersteichen die Autorinnen den ganzheitlichen Charakter qualitativer Forschung und die hierfür erforderliche Abstimmung zwischen Planung/Design, Datenerhebung/-auswertung sowie die in diesem Prozess sukzessive zu vollziehenden Abstraktionsleistungen. Das Buch taugt ausgezeichnet für die Einführung in qualitative Forschung, aber da eine ganze Reihe solcher Bücher existieren, obliegt die Wahl letztlich persönlicher Präferenz: ganz besonders empfehlenswert ist Readme First, wenn NVivo im Forschungsprozess eingesetzt werden soll.
This paper is about third sector organisations (TSOs) and how they use knowledge. Drawing from the emerging field of knowledge mobilisation, we argue that current policy and thinking about knowledge and TSOs too often employ a simplistic set of assumptions. We propose that there are many benefits to be had from taking an approach that acknowledges complexity and engages TSOs more deeply in knowledge production and use.
Von den Sozialwissenschaften in Großbritannien wird immer stärker erwartet, dass sie sich nicht nur hinsichtlich wissenschaftlicher und intellektueller Kriterien durch Exzellenz auszeichnen. Vielmehr müssen sie ihre Relevanz auch für unterschiedliche Interessengruppen und Forschungsnutzer aufweisen. Dieses Klima des Wandels macht sich an einer noch nie da gewesenen Zahl an strategischen Initiativen fest, die derzeit laufen. Der Zweck des Artikels besteht darin, die verschiedenen strategischen Entwicklungen zu überblicken und aufzuzeigen, wie sie zur Förderung der avancierten Entwicklungen in der Methodologie der Sozialwissenschaften beitragen. Dabei liegt das Augenmerk besonders auf den Entwicklungen im Bereich der qualitativen Methodologien und Methoden. In einem Teil des Beitrags werden wir Ergebnisse einer Erhebung bei britischen Sozialwissenschaftler(inne)n über die Ressourcen qualitativer Forschung bieten. In dem Beitrag werden – da das Rezensionswesen im Internet durch viele Online-Dienste verglichen mit anderen Angeboten relativ weit entwickelt ist – die wesentlichen Funktionen zusammengestellt sowie die zentralen Elemente von Rezensionen präzisiert. Diese Überlegungen werden ergänzt um Anmerkungen zur Hypertext-Strukturierung, zur Hybridisierung von Texten und zur Vernetzung von Informationen als genuin mit dem E-Publishing verbundene Möglichkeiten, die helfen könnten, die Orientierungs- und Evaluationsfunktion von Besprechungen zu erhöhen und damit auch generell zu einer besseren Qualitätskontrolle wissenschaftlicher Informationen und Publikationen beitragen könnten.
Realist evaluation has become widespread partly because of its sensitivity to the influence of contexts on policy implementation. In many such evaluations, the range of contexts considered relevant nevertheless remains disparate and under-conceptualised. This article uses findings from a realist evaluation of English Patient Safety Collaboratives during 2015–2018 to develop a realist taxonomy of contexts, differentiating contexts according to how they affect the corresponding policy mechanism. By analysing the main context-mechanism-outcome configurations that made up the English Patient Safety Collaboratives, we derive a taxonomy of the contexts that affected implementation and outcomes. The categories of context were structural (network, hierarchy, market and organisational contexts); resource-based (actors, material, financial); motivational (receptivity, outcome headroom), and temporal (continuity, history and convergence). To the categories found in previous studies, this study adds the three temporal contexts.
Abstract Background Volunteering has been advocated by the United Nations, and American and European governments as a way to engage people in their local communities and improve social capital, with the potential for public health benefits such as improving wellbeing and decreasing health inequalities. Furthermore, the US Corporation for National and Community Service Strategic Plan for 2011–2015 focused on increasing the impact of national service on community needs, supporting volunteers' wellbeing, and prioritising recruitment and engagement of underrepresented populations. The aims of this review were to examine the effect of formal volunteering on volunteers' physical and mental health and survival, and to explore the influence of volunteering type and intensity on health outcomes. Methods Experimental and cohort studies comparing the physical and mental health outcomes and mortality of a volunteering group to a non-volunteering group were identified from twelve electronic databases (Cochrane Library, Medline, Embase, PsychINFO, CINAHL, ERIC, HMIC, SSCI, ASSIA, Social Care Online, Social Policy and Practice) and citation tracking in January 2013. No language, country or date restrictions were applied. Data synthesis was based on vote counting and random effects meta-analysis of mortality risk ratios. Results Forty papers were selected: five randomised controlled trials (RCTs, seven papers); four non-RCTs; and 17 cohort studies (29 papers). Cohort studies showed volunteering had favourable effects on depression, life satisfaction, wellbeing but not on physical health. These findings were not confirmed by experimental studies. Meta-analysis of five cohort studies found volunteers to be at lower risk of mortality (risk ratio: 0.78; 95% CI: 0.66, 0.90). There was insufficient evidence to demonstrate a consistent influence of volunteering type or intensity on outcomes. Conclusion Observational evidence suggested that volunteering may benefit mental health and survival although the causal mechanisms remain unclear. Consequently, there was limited robustly designed research to guide the development of volunteering as a public health promotion intervention. Future studies should explicitly map intervention design to clear health outcomes as well as use pragmatic RCT methodology to test effects.
