Edgeless cities are a sprawling form of development that accounts for the bulk of office space found outside of downtowns. Every major metropolitan area has them: vast swaths of isolated buildings that are neither pedestrian friendly, nor easily accessible by public transit, and do not lend themselves to mixed use. While critics of urban sprawl tend to focus on the social impact of "edge cities"—developments that combine large-scale office parks with major retail and housing—edgeless cities, despite their ubiquity, are difficult to define or even locate. While they stay under the radar of critics, they represent a significant departure in the way American cities are built and are very likely the harbingers of a suburban future almost no one has anticipated. Edgeless Cities explores America's new metropolitan form by examining the growth and spatial structure of suburban office space across the nation. Inspired by Myron Orfield's groundbreaking Metropolitics (Brookings, 1997), Robert Lang uses data, illustrations, maps, and photos to delineate between two types of suburban office development—bounded and edgeless. The book covers the evolving geography of rental office space in thirteen of the country's largest markets, which together contain more than 2.6 billion square feet of office space and 26,000 buildings: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington. Lang discusses how edgeless cities differ from traditional office areas. He also provides an overview of national, regional, and metropolitan office markets, covers ways to map and measure them, and discusses the challenges urban policymakers and practitioners will face as this new suburban form continues to spread. Until now, edgeless cities have been the unstudied phenomena of the new metropolis.

; In 2015 there was a large number of refugees escaping the near- and middle East due to destruction, war and poverty. Future estimates predict up to 1 billion refugees by 2050. This work focuses on the gym as a medium for integration. For this purpose, a guideline questionnaire is used, which is associated with qualitative methods. A male sample of 10 respondents is surveyed with regard to components of intercultural competence. The training motives, the networking in the fitness studio, the reputation about the social position of the woman and behavioral guidelines are evaluated. The results of the study support the motivational gender stereotypes presented by society. Furthermore, from a male perspective, the motive of health seems to be very important for both sexes when going to the gym. Especially for the gym, the majority of the sample shows a liberal attitude towards women's self-determination. The fitness studio seems to have all the prerequisites for acquiring intercultural competence. However, the results must be enjoyed with caution in view of the long stay of almost 3 years until the first membership in a fitness club. Furthermore, due to the small sample size, no normal distribution can be concluded. In addition, there are other factors which, among other things, lead to criticism of the structure of the guideline questionnaire due to partly spongy formulations and suggestive questions. ; vorgelegt von Bsc., Robert Lang ; Zusammenfassungen in Deutsch und Englisch ; Abweichender Titel laut Übersetzung des Verfassers/der Verfasserin ; Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, Masterarbeit, 2019 ; (VLID)3676279

Many "boomburbs"—large, fast-growing suburbs—are nearing their "buildout," the point at which development has reached a city's borders or has exhausted large-scale greenfield options. Boomburbs will soon face a decision: Do they stop booming once they reach their current limits or develop a new growth model that more intensively uses existing land? Or will they annex more space for continuing greenfield development? The authors surveyed 140 boomburb governments about their buildout plans. The respondents provided information on several variables, including future density, the amount of space left to build on, and the mixture of land uses that will fill this space. The answers varied widely, with some places looking to become far more urbanized, while others rush to build even lower-density development. Yet most boomburbs expect to grow denser as they build out. The article concludes with a discussion on two policy implications of buildout: annexation and governance.

"Addresses the issue of 'boomburbs, ' large suburbs of more than 100,000 residents, and examines who lives in them, what drives their development, and how they are governed. Explains why America's suburbs are thriving and how they are shaping the lives of millions of residents"--Provided by publisher
