Abstract
This study of the afterlife of "abandoned" Jewish property in National Socialist Germany analyzes the emotional impact on Jewish families of the loss of personal belongings, and those belongings' emotional impact on the Gentile families that acquired them. This property could be movable and intimate: jewelry, furniture, porcelain, and the like; as well as immovable: apartments and houses illegitimately wrested from their residents or owners. The author asks how Gentiles' behavior changed in relation to the escalating Holocaust of the Jews. She argues that the reactions of both ordinary Germans and government authorities changed when the mass deportations started, indicating that non-Jewish Germans were very much aware of the experience of their Jewish neighbors.

Much has been discussed of whether the book is racist, social Darwinist, or defamatory, and what the high sales figures say about German society. By contrast, there has been little work done on how the book has actually been received. This article aims to do precisely that, by using (lay) reviews from three influential online booksellers (amazon.de, buecher.de and bol.de) as source material. The reviews establish that the narratives and interpretive patterns used by the reviewers are anything but new: they closely resemble the watchwords of the Sturm und Drang aesthetic movement (which included vehement criticism of social elites) and reactivate these. At the same time, a study of such patterns makes it clear that topics such as integration and democracy have played a surprisingly subordinate role in how the book has been perceived.

This article examines how globalization shaped work and employment in the German shipbuilding industry in the second half of the twentieth century. Official documents show that, as a response to global competition, originally large and labor-intensive shipyards in the northwest of Germany evolved into lean and nimble high-technology companies across four decades. Oral history interviews with former migrant and nonmigrant staff of two leading shipyards reveal that this large-scale industry transformation is a hitherto hidden history of labor mobility, migration, and evolving dimensions of diversity in the workplace. Migration is a lens through which to understand how corporate responses to global developments led to persistent patterns of social exclusion and inequality between and within groups of workers with and without migrant backgrounds that have not been documented before, namely: social divisions, unequal access to vocational training and retraining programs, unequal career opportunities, unfair redundancies, and unequal impact of precarious work.
