"Since the 1990s, a growing number of criminal courts around the world have been using expert assessments based on behavioral genetics and neuroscience to evaluate the responsibility and dangerousness of offenders. Despite this rapid circulation, however, we still know very little about the scientific knowledge underlying these expert evaluations. Hereditary traces the historical development of biosocial criminology in the United States from the 1960s to the present, showing how the fate of this movement is intimately linked to that of the field of criminology as a whole. In claiming to identify the biological and environmental causes of so-called "antisocial" behaviors, biosocial criminologists are redefining the boundary between the normal and the pathological. Julien Larregue examines what is at stake in the development of biosocial criminology. Beyond the origins of delinquency, Larregue addresses the reconfiguration of expertise in contemporary societies, and in particular the territorial struggles between the medical and legal professions. Cet article est une analyse de l'influence des recherches produites par une minorité bruyante de chercheurs dans un corpus de 48 articles étudiant l'effet différentiel des facteurs structurels sur les taux de criminalité des différents groupes raciaux aux États-Unis. La méthode de science sociale computationnelle utilisée fait apparaître l'influence limitée des grands choix méthodologiques sur les conclusions des chercheurs. En revanche, je montre qu'une seule équipe de recherche particulièrement productive fait pencher l'état du savoir disponible en concluant systématiquement à une réfutation de la racial invariance thesis , alors même que ses résultats quantitatifs bruts varient d'une étude à l'autre. En l'absence de standards scientifiques contraignants, cette minorité bruyante est libre d'adopter des interprétations qui vont dans le sens de ses intérêts théoriques préexistants.

Cet article analyse la criminologie biosociale états-unienne, domaine de recherche cristallisé dans les années 2000, à l'aune de la théorie du champ de Bourdieu. Mêlant variables biologiques et sociologiques, le mouvement biosocial propose une science du crime étendue aux comportement antisociaux. Criminologie controversée, elle est l'œuvre principale de chercheurs qui se trouvent dominés au sein d'un champ criminologique fortement marqué par la sociologie. Bien qu'hétérogène, ce courant de recherche est généralement identifié à une minorité bruyante d'universitaires issus de facultés de criminologie et de justice criminelle peu prestigieuses. Une analyse des discours et pratiques de cette minorité bruyante permet de mettre à jour toute une panoplie de stratégies plus ou moins subversives vis-à-vis de la socio-criminologie dominante et destinées à augmenter leur volume de capital scientifique et académique.

RésuméCet article analyse un jugement de la Cour suprême du Canada rendu en 2017, en le comparant à un cas semblable survenu en 2002 en Nouvelle-Zélande. La première cause visait à accorder une protection juridique à « l'esprit de l'ours Grizzly » habitant un mont de Colombie-Britannique sur lequel des promoteurs voulaient construire une station de ski et la seconde visait à protéger une créature spirituelle vivant dans les eaux du ruisseau. Dans les deux cas, la question posée aux juges revient à statuer sur l'existence de créatures métaphysiques, et donc à trancher un conflit ontologique. Les juges canadiens et néo-zélandais vont refuser d'étendre le domaine d'application du droit à la protection des objets de ces croyances. Leur conclusion peut se comprendre à la lumière du fait que le mode d'argumentation juridique, de par sa nature rationaliste et naturaliste, n'est pas en mesure de penser les entités métaphysiques à partir du cadre conceptuel que lui a légué la révolution scientifique du XVIIe siècle.

This article examines the relationship between knowledge hierarchies and gender stratification in research funding. Through a mixed-methods study combining data on 5460 funded and unfunded social science applications submitted to a research council in Western Europe, and nine interviews with current and former council members, we explore how applicants' disciplinary, thematic and methodological orientations intersect with gender to shape funding opportunities. Descriptive analysis indicates that women's proposals are underfunded, with a relative gender difference of around 20%. Using computational text analysis and mediation analysis, we approximate that around one-third of this disparity may be attributed to gender differences in disciplinary focus, thematic specialisations and methodologies. The interviews with council members allow us to make sense of these disparities and expose the disciplinary hierarchies and power struggles at play in the council, sometimes resulting in a devaluation of qualitative methods and, more broadly, interpretive, descriptive and exploratory approaches in proposal assessments.

AbstractHow do parenthood and publishing contribute to gender gaps in academic career advancement? While extensive research examines the causes of gender disparities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers, we know much less about the factors that constrain women's advancement in the social sciences. Combining detailed career‐ and administrative register data on 976 Danish social scientists in Business and Management, Economics, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology (5703 person‐years) that obtained a PhD degree between 2000 and 2015, we estimate gender differences in attainment of senior research positions and parse out how publication outputs, parenthood and parental leave contribute to these differences. Our approach is advantageous over previous longitudinal studies in that we track the careers and publication outputs of graduates from the outset of their PhD education and match this data with time‐sensitive information on each individual's publication activities and family situation. In discrete time‐event history models, we observe a ∼24 per cent female disadvantage in advancement likelihoods within the first 7 years after PhD graduation, with gender differences increasing over the observation period. A decomposition indicates that variations in publishing, parenthood and parental leave account for ∼ 40 per cent of the gender gap in career advancement, suggesting that other factors, including recruitment disparities, asymmetries in social capital and experiences of unequal treatment at work, may also constrain women's careers.
