Using transcribed audio narratives of the May 1980 Kwangju (South Korea) incident (a major political demonstration forcibly quelled by the military) & the visit of South Korean president Chun Doo Hwan to the White House in 1981, the role of TV coverage in US policy toward South Korea is examined. It is suggested that there was a relative lack of TV interest in either event, & thus politicians played a greater role in constructing opinion about South Korea. Conclusions speculate whether news media or personages should be allowed the power to direct public opinion. 4 Tables. L. Baker
