The essay analyses the political relations between rural lordships and supralocal powers in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries central Italy, on the base of researches carried out during the 2015 project PRIN. The areas considered are the territories of the Papal State, Tuscany and Sardinia. The essay proceeds by territorial frameworks, with the aim of bringing out the different peculiarities of each area and the most relevant common phenomena regarding the relational dynamics between the secular or ecclesiastical domain spaces and the higher powers, with particular reference to the Papacy, to the cities and sovereigns (as in the case of the Aragon Crown in the Sardinian context).
ENGLISH: The essay analyses the political history of Norcia in the fifteenth century through its relations with the papal government. Starting from the institutional, social, territorial and factional framework of the city, the essay then moves on to the methods of intervention used by central authorities to exert political control over the Umbrian mountain area under the domination and influence of Norcia. As is argued, this was achieved through the selection of eminent groups of citizens and continuous negotiation with the local community through the mediation of local elites.

The essay analyses the political history of Norcia in the fifteenth century through its relations with the papal government.
The objectives of the essay start from the tracing of the territorial and economic framework of Norcia in the XVth century, and from the reconstruction of its civic life: institutions, offices and assemblies. Then the essay moves on to the analysis of the local society, to the identification of the eminent families, of the characteristics of the other social groups, of the structure and composition of the ruling class. Finally are examinated the political relations with the papal government, especially the methods of intervention used by the Holy See to control that area. Methodologically the essay is based on the connection between the study of local societies, especially about the cities' leading groups, and the study of the relations between them and the central power. Among the main results, in this case, emerge some significant specificities of the Norcia context, which highlight the diversity of methods used by the papal government to relate to the different political subjects of its State.
ENGLISH: The essay introduces the collection of papers Institutions, relationships, and political cultures in the cities along the border between the Papal States and the Kingdom of Naples (c. 1350-1500). After discussing two persistent points of view on the urban political history of late medieval Italy – the North-South dualism and the pluralistic understanding of the regional states– this essay highlights some points for reflection which arise from recent studies. It then suggestsnew perspectives to verify, through the following contributions, the existence of an area of urban political culture at the borders between the Papal States and the Kingdom of Naples. Lastly, it presents the specific issues that guided the authors' work.
The monographic section includes six essays concerning seven cities: Benevento (G. Araldi), Terracina and Gaeta (M.T. Caciorgna), Rieti (T. Leggio), Norcia (F. Lattanzio), Ascoli (F. Pirani), L'Aquila (P. Terenzi). Those cases are analysed in detail, following some specific issues – institutions, social groups and elites, factions and supralocal alliances, personal power, territory, negotiation with monarchical authorities, elements of urban political culture – in order to verify the existence of an area, around the borders between the Papal States and the Kingdom of Naples, characterised by common political features, from the half of the fourteenth to the end of the fifteenth century. ; La sezione monografica presenta sei saggi dedicati a sette città: Benevento (G. Araldi), Terracina e Gaeta (M.T. Caciorgna), Rieti (T. Leggio), Norcia (F. Lattanzio), Ascoli (F. Pirani), L'Aquila (P. Terenzi).

In the late Middle Ages, Italy was one of the most urbanized areas in Europe. Its coasts, the Apennines, the perialpine area and the plains were all home to a large number of smaller towns, lands, villages, castra, and 'quasi cites'. These settlements were all very diverse in terms of demographic consistency, social articulation and economic dynamism, but together they constituted a characteristic and constitutive element of the Italian historical identity: an 'original personality'. This volume, thanks to some framing essays and a mapping of individual cases involving most of the northern, central and southern regions, aims at investigating the active research on this topic over the last thirty to forty years.
