Die Forschungspolitik erwartet zunehmend, dass auch qualitative sozialwissenschaftliche Daten archiviert und für die Nachnutzung zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Es mangelt jedoch an empirischen Analysen zu den forschungspraktischen Möglichkeiten und Folgen einer Archivierung. Mit unserem Beitrag adressieren wir diese Lücke. Wir stellen einen gescheiterten Archivierungsversuch von leitfadengestützten Interviews in einem wissenschaftssoziologischen Projekt vor, der durch die Forderung des Forschungsförderers nach der Bereitstellung der Daten für eine Nachnutzung veranlasst wurde. Wir rekonstruieren alle Entscheidungsprozesse, die zur Vorbereitung der Datenarchivierung getroffen wurden. Wir mussten entscheiden, ob und in welcher Form Daten archiviert werden sollen, wie das Prinzip der informierten Einwilligung realisiert wird, wie wir die Einwilligung der Interviewten einholen, wie wir die Interviews anonymisieren und wie Kontextinformationen bereitgestellt werden. Unsere Analyse zeigt, dass die Erfordernisse des Datenschutzes und der Forschungsethik zu unüberwindbaren forschungspraktischen Problemen führen können, die einer Archivierung von qualitativen Daten entgegenstehen. Wir möchten mit diesem Artikel zur methodologischen Diskussion über die Eignung qualitativer Methoden für spezifische Zwecke beitragen, indem wir die Rolle der extrahierenden qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse in der Entdeckung kausaler Mechanismen diskutieren. Die empirische Identifizierung kausaler Mechanismen wird in der methodologischen Literatur als Process Tracing bezeichnet. Allerdings wird die Literatur durch die Idee dominiert, Process Tracing würde das Vorhandensein eines hypothetischen Mechanismus testen. Wir betonen dagegen die Entdeckung kausaler Mechanismen auf der Basis einer kausalen Rekonstruktion, wie sie von MAYNTZ (2009 [2002], 2016) vorgeschlagen wurde. Wir identifizieren die extrahierende qualitative Inhaltsanalyse als eine distinkte qualitative Methode und spezifizieren ihr Ergebnis als eine strukturierte Informationsbasis, die für die Rekonstruktion sozialer Situationen und Prozesse genutzt werden kann. Eine solche Informationsbasis ist ein wichtiger Ausgangspunkt für die Kausalanalyse. Wir demonstrieren die Rolle der extrahierenden qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse an einer empirischen Studie von LAUDEL und BIELICK (2018), in der die Mechanismen identifiziert wurden, die zur Entstehung individueller Forschungsprogramme von Nachwuchswissenschaftler_innen führen.

Our analysis shows that the requirements of data protection and research ethics can lead to insurmountable research-practical problems that stand in the way of archiving qualitative data. Such problems also occur in other areas of sociology.

Scientific communities expect early career researchers (ECRs) to become intellectually independent and to develop longer-term research plans (individual research programs [IRPs]). How such programs emerge during the early career phase is still poorly understood. Drawing on semistructured interviews with German ECRs in plant biology, experimental physics, and early modern history, we show that the development of such a plan is a research process in itself. The processes leading to IRPs are conditioned by the fields' epistemic practices for producing new knowledge. By linking the conditions under which ECRs work to the epistemic properties of their IRPs, we identify mechanisms that produce these programs and conditions facilitating or hindering the operation of these mechanisms.

While the studies of Early Career Researchers (ECRs) have contributed politically important insights into factors hindering ECRs, they have not yet achieved a theoretical understanding of the causal mechanisms that are at work in the transition from dependent to independent research. This paper positions the early career phase in a theoretical framework that combines approaches from the sociology of science and organisational sociology and emphasises the transitional process. In this framework, the early career phase is considered as containing a status passage from the apprentice to the colleague state of their career in their scientific communities. In order to capture the mechanisms underlying this transition, it is important to analyse the interactions of these careers as they unfold over time. The usefulness of this approach is demonstrated with a pilot study of Australian ECRs. We show (a) that misalignments of the three careers stretch the transition phase; (b) that the two major factors affecting the transition are a successful PhD and a research-intensive phase prior to normal academic employment; and (c) that the most important condition hindering the transition is the lack of time for research. It can be concluded that as a result of a 'market failure' of the university system, the transition from dependent to independent research is currently being relocated to a phase between the PhD and the first academic position.

"Abrupt changes in research content are of interest to innovation research because many innovations in general and scientific innovations in particular emerge from such changes. However, investigations of innovations emerging from research processes face the problem that the initial change of direction in research by one or few researchers is an elusive phenomenon. The method presented in this article contributes to solving this problem by supporting the in-depth analysis of individual research biographies and of the emergence of new directions of research in these. The method employs bibliometric tools for a reconstruction of individual cognitive careers, embeds these reconstructions in qualitative studies of research biographies, and provides opportunities to link cognitive careers to the dynamics of scientific fields. As we will demonstrate, the method is generic in that it supports not only the investigation of scientific innovations but also, more generally, the identification of thematic change in individual cognitive careers. "Qualitative Forschung, die 'mechanismische' Erklärungen konstruieren will, muss die bereits existierende Theorie mit in den Daten gefundenen Mustern integrieren, was eine besondere Herausforderung für qualitative Datenanalyse darstellt. In diesem Artikel diskutieren wir die Nutzung zweier Methoden - Kodieren und qualitative Inhaltsanalyse - als erste Schritte im Prozess der Datenanalyse. Beide Methoden produzieren durch Kategorien strukturierte Datenbasen, die für die Suche nach Mustern in den Daten und deren Integration in systematische, theoretisch eingebettete Erklärungen genutzt werden kann. Wenn es als separate Methode außerhalb des Grounded-Theory-Ansatzes genutzt wird, führt Kodieren auf einen indizierten Text, d.h. der Text selbst und die seinen Index bildenden Kodes werden in den folgenden Schritten weiter verarbeitet. Qualitative Inhaltsanalyse extrahiert die relevanten Informationen (separiert sie vom Text) und verarbeitet sie getrennt weiter. Die qualitative Inhaltsanalyse scheint dem Kodieren überlegen, wenn Forschungsfragen aus der Theorie abgeleitet werden und ihre Beantwortung auf Informationen über die relative Position von Aussagen in Texten verzichten kann, was bei der Suche nach 'mechanismischen' Erklärungen häufig der Fall ist. Kodieren scheint überlegen, wenn Forschungsfragen stärker explorativer Natur sind oder die Position von Informationen im Text für die Beantwortung der Forschungsfragen relevant ist." Re-Analysen spitzen diesen Vergleich noch einmal zu, weil sie sich auf dieselbe Datenbasis beziehen und eine der Primäruntersuchung entstammende Frage behandeln. Die diesem Beitrag zugrunde liegende Re-Analyse nutzte Transkripte von Leitfadeninterviews, die im SFB 186 in Bremen archiviert sind. Ein Ergebnis der Primärstudie wurde auf eine Hypothese zugespitzt, die mit einer qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse geprüft wurde. Der Vergleich von Primärstudie und Re-Analyse deckt einige kritische Entscheidungen auf, die die Datenauswertung in unterschiedliche Richtungen steuern und zu gegensätzlichen Ergebnissen führen können. Solche Entscheidungen bleiben gewöhnlich implizit und werden nur thematisiert, wenn Widersprüche zwischen Ergebnissen erklärt werden müssen. Ein zweites Ergebnis betrifft typische Gefahren von Primärstudien und Sekundäranalysen. Erstere scheinen einem 'Gestaltschließungszwang' zu unterliegen: Im Bestreben, den Daten einen Sinn zu geben, werden Datenlücken durch Plausibilitätsbetrachtungen geschlossen und Gegenevidenz vernachlässigt. Sekundärstudien haben vor allem das Problem, dass sie durch die vorgängige Erhebung thematisch und methodisch beschränkt werden. Social entities create institutional frameworks, i.e. internal systems of rules which govern (but do not control) the actions of their members. Both scientific communities and scientific organisations are social entities whose institutional frameworks include rules promoting internal collaboration. Based upon a diffuse reciprocity, members of the social entities are stimulated to collaborate with other members. The tendency to prefer other members as collaborators is accompanied by a relative exclusion of non-members from collaborations. Thus, in this way institutional frameworks create institutional boundaries hindering collaboration. In order to overcome institutional boundaries both within universities and between scientific communities, in Germany collaborative research centres (CRCs) were established. These are networks of research groups from different departments of one or more universities, i.e. from different organisations and different scientific communities. They contain their own institutional framework, which overlaps with the institutional frameworks of both organisations and scientific communities. Because the network's institutional framework includes rules promoting collaborations, these necessarily span the original institutional boundaries. A detailed discussion of these rules shows the functional equivalence of the different social entities' (communities, organisations and networks) institutional frameworks. ; Scientific communities und formale Organisationen wie Forschungsinsitute oder Universitäten bilden jeweils eigene Institutionensysteme aus. Diese Institutionensysteme fördern direkt oder vermittelt Kooperationen zwischen den Mitgliedern der communities bzw. Organisationen. Indem sie Kooperationen zwischen ihren Mitgliedern fördern, errichten sie aber zugleich institutionelle Schranken für die Kooperation mit Außenstehenden. Solche Kooperationen werden durch die Institutionensysteme meist nicht unterstützt und damit relativ erschwert. Die Mitglieder einer scientific community oder Organisation wählen deshalb tendenziell Kooperationspartner aus derselben community bzw. Organisation. Um solche institutionellen Schranken zu überwinden, hat die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft das Förderprogramm 'Sonderforschungsbereiche' (SFB) etabliert. Dabei handelt es sich um Netzwerke von Forschungsgruppen, die aus verschiedenen Fachbereichen einer oder mehrerer Universitäten stammen. Die Sonderforschungsbereiche bilden ein eigenes Institutionensystem aus, das die der scientific communities und der Organisationen überlagert. Weil auch dieses Institutionensystem kooperationsfördernde Regeln enthält, werden innerhalb eines SFB solche Kooperationen gefördert, die die klassischen institutionellen Grenzen überschreiten. Eine Analyse der kooperationsfördernden Regeln von SFB zeigt, daß sie den in scientific communities und Organisationen entstehenden Regeln funktional äquivalent sind.

In this article, we address one of the recurrent problems of career theory, namely the integration of individual agency and structural conditions of action in explanations of career decisions, and through them, career trajectories and their outcomes. We draw on Barley's suggestion to include scripts as mediating between institutions and individual actions. By theoretically specifying scripts as collectively shared interpretive schemes that describe successful careers, we are able to introduce them as a specific factor that contributes to the explanation of career decisions. We demonstrate with a study of German early career researchers in two fields how scripts can be empirically identified and used in combination with other explanatory factors. Our analysis demonstrates how the concept 'career script' captures a specific social influence on career decisions that is different from rules governing behaviour and individual interests, goals and plans for a career.
