Von den Vereinigten Staaten als einem der größten internationalen Waffenlieferanten wurden besonders in den achtziger Jahren regelmäßig illegale Rüstungsexporte unter Verletzung einschlägiger Bestimmungen getätigt. Diese Exporte waren überwiegend privatwirtschaftlicher Natur und wurden häufig unter Umgehung des bürokratischen Prozesses zur Eindämmung der weltweiten Rüstung abgewickelt. Es wurden nicht nur komplette konventionelle Waffensysteme geliefert, sondern darüber hinaus auch Ersatzteile sowie technische Kenntnisse, meist durch Transaktionen über Drittländer. Als Musterbeispiele für entsprechende Methoden werden Verkaufsabschlüsse mit dem Iran und Nordkorea analysiert. Das U.S. Department of Justice versuchte, derartige Verstöße aufzuklären und zu unterbinden. (SWP-Btg)
