Benito Feijoo (1676-1764) was one of the most important mediators to the public of the latest scientific and philosophical ideas in Spain in the eighteenth century. A self-conscious critic of all sorts of ideas and a member of the republic of letters, he also called himself a skeptic. At first, that meant allying himself with physician Martín Martínez, a famous critic of Aristotelianism in medicine who also called himself a skeptic. After supporting Martínez's view of skepticism in medicine against his critics, Feijoo seems to have abandoned the term, perhaps because he learned more about what the term could mean and realized it could be understood in some quarters to undermine the Catholic church and support atheistic materialism. He explored what skepticism could mean in medicine in some detail, but avoided using it in philosophical and theological matter

Thomas Mann developed one of the most subtle theories of irony during World War I, concluding that the best irony was irony against both sides of any issue. Such irony was not inconsistent with love for humanity, and even for both sides. He may well have been justified in using irony against both sides in that war. But with the rise of the Nazis, he abandoned two-sided irony and used his irony mostly against them. One the one hand, this meant a better political position, but on the other hand irony was almost absent from many of his wartime essays and declarations. That may have been justified in such a time of danger, but it meant less art and subtlety in his political writings. ; Thomas Mann desarolló una de las teorías más sútiles de la ironía durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, declarando que la mejor ironía era la ironía contra los dos lados de cualquier asunto. Christian Thomasius was above all a professor of jurisprudence who used his legal skills to resolve all sorts of legal, political, and moral problems. In this article we review two of his writings that contributed to his rearticulation of the relations between religion and politics in early modernity. He used the elements of what later became the concept of the rule of law to defend Denis Veiras, author of the Histoire des Sevarambes, against charges of atheism. He also defended the skeptical jurisprudence of Georg Heber as the best instrument for separating church and state and assigning each their proper roles, and made use of theological skepticism to justify excluding the theologians from politics and limit the interventions of princes into religious matters except in cases where the peace of the state was endangered. ; Christian Thomasius fue, ante todo, un profesor de Derecho que utilizó su formación jurídica para resolver todo tipo de problemas legales, políticos y morales. En este artículo veremos que dos de sus escritos plasmaron parte de su contribución a la articulación de las relaciones apropiadas entre religión y política en la modernidad. Asimismo, utilizó el incipiente concepto de Estado de derecho (rule of law) para defender a Denis Veiras, autor de la Histoire des Sevarambes, de la acusación de ateísmo. Del mismo modo, defendió la jurisprudencia escéptica de Georg Heber como el mejor instrumento para separar la Iglesia del Estado, y se valió de la teología escéptica para justificar la exclusión de los teólogos de la política y contener la intervención de los príncipes en asuntos religiosos, salvo en los casos en que estuviese en juego la paz política.

One of those places was late eighteenth century Germany, where authors such as Louis de Beausobre, Jean Bernard Mérian, Louis Frédéric Ancillon, and Carl Friedrich Stäudlin explored the skepticism of thinkers like Sextus Empiricus, David Hume, and Immanuel Kant, concluding that it was harmless for politics and religion.

This article is an exploration of David Hume's philosophy of custom and habit as a way of living with skepticism. For Hume, man is a habit-forming animal, and all politics and history take place within a history of custom and habit. This is not a bad thing: life without custom and habit would be a nightmare. Hume draws on the "new science" of thinkers such as Locke, Shaftesbury, Mandeville, Hutcheson, and Butler to foreground the importance of custom and habit. His own contribution is a detailed exploration of philosophical psychology that brings out the role of habits of action such as politeness and manners and habits of thinking such as opinion and reasoning. Finally, life in accordance with customs and habits is not inherently conservative or quietist: there are endogenous and exogenous sources of change and progress in custom and habits.
