AbstractCurrently, the process mining aims at an automatic extraction of process knowledge from the event logs recorded by information systems, and, therefore, by using these techniques, it becomes possible to grasp the complex nature of industrial processes. In fact, most of the industrial processes change over time, and through the process mining techniques, it is possible to analyse these processes as if they were in a steady state. Starting to this concept, in this paper, we provide a systematic literature review that analyses the applications of process mining techniques in relation to the industrial context in order to highlight the importance of these new techniques in this scenario. To do the systematic literature review, we use the Tranfield approach (2003), and we identify the most interesting papers in the sector under analysis. After that, an in‐depth analysis of the selected papers was carried out.

The paper investigates information and communication technology (ICT)‐based and face‐to‐face interactions for knowledge sharing during the activities characterizing the innovation process rather than strategic or operative ones. It also discussed the benefits of working remotely in companies or in a network of companies, also due to the pandemic situation such as the one we are experiencing today. The research design is based on the exploitation of a case study in the aerospace sector. Qualitative data are collected with interviews, and a content analysis is applied for extracting data useful for exploring different kind of relationships. Three significant results are described about the role of face‐to‐face interactions in knowledge sharing; the interaction through ICT tools for communication; and the different types of support provided by ICT tools. The paper extends the state of the art with new evidence in the field of knowledge sharing and conversion for sustaining the innovation process. The findings are original since new insights for the analysis of relationships are provided. Furthermore, the research methodology is described in detail and can introduce managers and scientists in content analysis applications also for industrial exploitation.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to describe the case of a leading Italian aerospace company which developed an integrated system aimed to optimize the management of engineering competencies within the Chief Technical Office function.Design/methodology/approachThe paper was based on a set of interviews to company referents and a one‐year period of researcher's observation at the company site to analyze competence management processes and the application on the field of the methodology and the tool. The approach adopted is to present a real practice following a pragmatic and illustrative approach.FindingsThe integrated system provides an objective method to support critical evaluations related to the management of competencies and actors. The benefits achieved derive from a more effective and efficient monitoring of competencies available to perform given activities, and from the analysis of gaps, actor allocation, and job‐rotation issues.Research limitations/implicationsThe application of the method and the tool is still quite "dependent" from the skills of their developers. Besides, the activities and competencies of those units which support new product development processes should be also integrated in the system.Practical implicationsThe case described can be a useful benchmark for organizations working in complex industries in the effort of improving the performance of engineering activities through an enhanced management of knowledge about people potential and expertise.Originality/valueThe value of the paper may stay in a twofold process/project and people management perspective in the monitoring, development, and scouting of technical competencies.

AbstractDigital transformation of private and public entities is a process strongly encouraged by the European Commission. The social housing sector, which provides long‐term housing or subsidies for vulnerable households, struggles to reach a good digitalization level and needs specific solutions that address its technical, financial, and administrative peculiarities. Indeed, the social housing sector often faces issues related to insufficient available funds that can be used for optimizing assets' maintenance operations, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of building occupants with better management of financial resources. Furthermore, it is not a widely explored area by the research community. To provide digital solutions for innovating the management of the property assets and, specifically, the maintenance activities for social housing, the paper presents a case study from the Italian social housing system. Current available processes, data, and information systems are explored to propose a solution for the visualization and management of collected data at the provincial, municipality, and building levels. The main purpose is to support decision makers for maintenance activities. Scholars and practitioners in this research field can benefit from the proposed solution to lead actions for the digital transition of the social housing sector.

PurposeMany differences exist between a generic process representation and the real flow of activities performed in relation to specific products/programs within an enterprise. The product life cycle modeling approach allows us to model the temporal flow of activities from conceptualization to disposal of specific product/program. In contrast, the business process modeling approach provides a general process perspective. The two views taken alone are not entirely satisfactory. This paper aims to propose a unified and integrated product–business process modeling approach, which overcomes the limitations inherent in adopting a single perspective, maintaining as much as possible, the essential characteristics and strengths of both modeling approaches.Design/methodology/approachThe conceptual model of the proposed unified approach is based on the review of existing process and product modeling theories and on an inductive perspective emerging from the observation of the organizational practices in a number of Italian aerospace companies.FindingsThe proposed approach is expressed in eight guidelines, which describe a new unifying perspective to be adopted in different domains, which ensure that managers identify the assets and activities that are associated with each product that an organization creates. Constraints are also suggested. Some practical applications and examples using the software, aris (IDS Scheer, Saarland, Germany) are also provided based on actual practices in an aerospace company.Originality/valueThis paper describes a new unifying perspective for a combination of product/business process modeling view.
