; This article offers a analysis on the narrative strategies used by Josep Antoni Duran i Lleida, the leader of the center-right catalanist coalition Convergència i Unió, in his speech in defence of the new Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia presented in the Spanish Parliament in 2005. The article suggests that Duran's speech followed a long-standing grand narrative frame organized around the following three interrelated features: a) an absolute notion of historico-political 'truth' and 'reality' that the Catalan (as opposed to Spanish) political classes are in possession of; b) the double role of Catalonia as victim and redeemer of Spain; and c) the construction of the Statute debate as a turning point in the history of Spain, as the moment for the potential redemption of Spain with the help of Catalonia. The article argues that this particular narrative framework, which ultimately precludes the idea of total separation, is a manifestation of the dual position of Catalonia within Spain as a region with a strong sense of identity but also with strong economic and political interests within Spain.

The musical contest Operación Triunfo, broadcast by the state-financed Televisión Española, broke audience records all over Spain. The almost identical audience behaviour shown by Catalans and the rest of Spaniards triggered a negative reaction in the Catalanist
daily Avui which attempted to counteract the success of the programme by arguing that it was homogenizing, tasteless and erosive of the Catalan public sphere, and a danger to Catalan national identity. This article argues that the ideologically-driven counteractive strategies of Avui showed
'modern' features that might be at odds with the 'postmodern' tendencies of present-day society and particularly with the predominance of entertainment in the media.

; This article offers a critical analysis of all 'op-ed' columns related to the fortieth anniversary of the Spanish Constitution published in the daily ABC on 6 and 7 December 2018, and in three online newspapers: elconfidencial.com, eldiario.es and infoLibre.es, on 5, 6 and 7 December 2018. Within this celebratory context, an ideological competition developed which took the shape of narratives and counter-narratives around the period to transition to democracy after the death of Franco and the Constitution itself. This study presents and analyses the features of the grand narrative reproduced by ABC –hegemonic, nostalgic and opposed to constitutional reform– vis-à-vis the alternative narratives disseminated by the three digital dailies which, to a greater or lesser extent, advocated the need to reform the Constitution as the way of solving the Spanish institutional crisis.
