International audience ; We present Geometric Data Analysis applied to a barometer data survey in order to construct the French "trust space", define groups of French citizens as regards trust and study the evolution of trust over time.The data source stems from the survey entitled "Le baromètre de la confiance politique" ("Barometer of political trust") carried out by the CEVIPOF (Center for political studies in Science Po, Paris). The data have been collected since 2009 on a yearly basis. The samples (about 1,500 persons) are designed to be representative of the French citizens registered to vote.A set of 22 questions that are relevant to 5 themes (trust in political and non-political institutions, economic institutions, interpersonal and personal trust) is selected for this study. The questions are bipolar (19 are coded on a Likert scale with 4 or 5-point and 3 are dichotomous).For constructing the space, we perform correspondence analysis (CA) after doubling the data and we weight the questions in order to balance the importance of themes. Individuals of Wave 1 (2009) are put as active individuals (reference wave), the ones of other waves are supplementary elements. Then, for studying the evolution of each question, we compute the weighted mean of the principal coordinates of individuals of each wave.For defining groups of individuals, we proceed to Euclidean clustering (AHC, Ward's method) using the same distance between individuals than the one used in CA. The clustering is performed on the individuals of Wave 1; individuals of the other waves (2012, 2013 and 2014) are assigned to clusters. We propose a strategy for assigning supplementary objects to clusters stemming from an AHC. The assignment will be made downwards based upon the superior hierarchy at the local level of a node to one of its two successors until a cluster of the partition under study is reached. For each node, we define an assignment criterion based on the ratio of distances from the object-point to barycenters of both clusters that make up the node. The distances refer to the Mahalanobis distances associated with each cluster. This ranking rule enables us to take the shape of clusters into account.The methods are implemented in R that can be invoked from SPAD Software.

La notion de champ a fait l'objet d'un travail de formalisation implicite depuis que Pierre Bourdieu a développé, dans les années 1960 et 1970, une approche relationnelle de l'espace social. Celle-ci l'a conduit à promouvoir une conception spatialisée du social, qui s'est épanouie avec le recours à l'analyse géométrique des données (AGD) dans l'analyse empirique des champs. Using data drawn from the Cultural Capital and Social Exclusion study, we examine the relationship between social class membership and cultural participation and taste in the areas of music, reading, television and film, visual arts, leisure, and eating out. Using Geometric Data Analysis, we examine the nature of the two most important axes which distinguish `the space of lifestyles'. By superimposing socio-demographic variables on this cultural map, we show that the first, most important, axis is indeed strongly associated with class. We inductively assess which kind of class boundaries can most effectively differentiate individuals within this `space of lifestyles'.The most effective model distinguishes a relatively small professional class (24%) from an intermediate class of lower managerial workers, supervisors, the self-employed, senior technicians and white collar workers (32%) and a relatively large working class which includes lower supervisors and technicians (44%).

En utilisant l'analyse géométrique des données, cette étude tente de sortir des méthodes multi-variées classiques où l'on ne saisit que des être de raisons (électorat, facteurs, variables) pour réintroduire les individus au cœur de l'analyse. À partir de l'enquête postélectorale du CEVIPOF réalisée du 26 au 31 mai 1997, l'étude s'efforce de situer individuellement les élec­teurs dans l'espace des valeurs et des enjeux économiques et sociaux. L'analyse géométrique des données permet de dégager trois axes principaux rendant le mieux compte de la répartition des individus et des clivages d'attitudes et d'opinions qui les divisent. Le premier axe, dont la variance est la plus élevée, oppose un ensemble d'électeurs aux " attitudes ouvertes " à l'autre (que cet autre soit étranger, l'Europe ou la mondialisation), et un ensemble d'électeurs aux " attitudes fermées ". Cette opposition ne recoupe pas l'opposition droite-gauche. Les deux autres axes opposent les électeurs sur le plan des attitudes sociales et sur le plan des attitudes vis-à-vis du libéralisme. On retrouve alors une opposition droite-gauche plus classique. Sur tous ces axes, la dispersion des électeurs de chacun des grands électorals est très forte. La variance intra (à l'intérieur des électorals) est toujours plus importante que la variance inter (entre les électorals). Cette analyse géométrique des données de l'enquête postélectorale de 1997 permet ainsi de mettre en valeur deux éléments décisifs pour comprendre aujourd'hui le vote en France. D'une part, le vote agrège, derrière un même bulletin déposé dans l'urne, des valeurs très diversifiées et même contradictoires. D'autre part, l'espace politique des électeurs est assez largement différent de l'espace politique construit par les forces politiques. Ce déca­lage entre la " demande " des électeurs en termes de valeurs et d'attitudes et " l'offre politique ", telle qu'elle est configurée par le système politique, est certainement un des élé­ments forts de la crise contemporaine de la représentation politique.

The social scientific analysis of social class is attracting renewed interest given the accentuation of economic and social inequalities throughout the world. The most widely validated measure of social class, the Nuffield class schema, developed in the 1970s, was codified in the UK's National Statistics Socio-Economic Classification (NS-SEC) and places people in one of seven main classes according to their occupation and employment status. This principally distinguishes between people working in routine or semi-routine occupations employed on a 'labour contract' on the one hand, and those working in professional or managerial occupations employed on a 'service contract' on the other. However, this occupationally based class schema does not effectively capture the role of social and cultural processes in generating class divisions. We analyse the largest survey of social class ever conducted in the UK, the BBC's 2011 Great British Class Survey, with 161,400 web respondents, as well as a nationally representative sample survey, which includes unusually detailed questions asked on social, cultural and economic capital. Using latent class analysis on these variables, we derive seven classes. We demonstrate the existence of an 'elite', whose wealth separates them from an established middle class, as well as a class of technical experts and a class of 'new affluent' workers. We also show that at the lower levels of the class structure, alongside an ageing traditional working class, there is a 'precariat' characterised by very low levels of capital, and a group of emergent service workers. We think that this new seven class model recognises both social polarisation in British society and class fragmentation in its middle layers, and will attract enormous interest from a wide social scientific community in offering an up-to-date multi-dimensional model of social class.
