Why does one immigrant worker get involved in critical learning whereas another does not? This study attempted to answer the question by revealing how social ties of immigrant workers play a key role in mediating critical learning to a particular political attitude. The results of the study suggested that immigrant workers who showed a resistant political attitude, which is linked to the process of critical learning, tended to have more social ties and occupy more important socio-structural positions in their network than other peer workers.

The case of the European Union shows that regional integration can make significant contributions to peace and prosperity; however, where regional integration in Northeast Asia is concerned the dominant opinions are more skeptical. The main obstacle to regional integration is that the initiative has been limited to intergovernmental agreements. This paper contends that a community-building project at the state level will be likely to gain momentum if multiple levels of regional cooperation are emphasized at the local level. I have selected South Korea and China for this case study, with particular reference to Gyeonggi Province (do) and Shandong Province (sheng), due to their intensive inter-regional exchanges. The examination of various interactions observed at the trans-regional level provides a perspective on the roles of local governments and leads to an invaluable rediscovery of the merits of a bottom-up approach. This article exposes precisely what ideological influences have been situated as authoritative and as marginal within UNESCO's lifelong learning policy discourses over time, periodizing those discourses in terms of their political-economic contexts. As such, analysis reveals UNESCO's continuous commitment to extending social democratic liberalist lifelong learning discourses of global educational development in the interest of global justice.

No Child Left Behind has mandated that all students reach proficiency by 2014. This mandate places special emphasis on the performance of special education students. The purpose of this study is to use social theory to understand the factors that explain the achievement of emotionally or behaviorally disordered (E/BD) students. Results suggest a differential effect of neighborhood composition on the development of social ties for Black and White E/BD students. The author argues for an increased awareness of the development of within-school social ties that integrate groups.

"This handbook for educators and researchers consists of an unparalleled set of conceptual essays and empirical studies that advance new perspectives and build empirical ground on multicultural education issues from 12 different selected societies in Asia Pacific. This unique, edited book will be a solid resource particularly for graduate students, educators, and researchers involved in multicultural education, given its multiple balances in terms of 1) conceptual essays, empirical studies, and practical implications, 2) contributions from emerging scholars, established scholars, and leading scholars in the field, and 3) comprehensive coverage of key subareas in multicultural education. Given the growing need for in-depth understanding of multicultural education issues in the Asia Pacific region where we have witnessed increasing human mobility and interaction across countries and societies, this edited book is the only research-based handbook entirely focusing on multicultural education in Asia Pacific" --
