"Enterprises located in rural regions face various challenges in the globalised and digitised world. This book offers comprehensive answers to the question of what makes up the rural enterprise economy in the contemporary business world. It addresses the competitiveness and viability, strategic management and strategic change, and marketing issues for both incumbent and start-up companies in rural regions. The book presents new concepts that shed light on the rural enterprise economy with its entrepreneurs. With a broad range of cases from European regions, the book provides theoretical insights for scholars, practical case-based evidence for lecturers and teachers, and practical knowledge for business practitioners and planning specialists. Academic experts from European universities and research institutes provide compelling answers to this under-researched topic in business studies and economics"--

"The digital and increasingly digitised world is shaped by the interplay of new technological opportunities and ubiquitous societal trends. Both lead to drastic changes facing artificial intelligence (AI), cryptocurrencies and block-chain technologies, internet of things, technology-based surveillance and other disruptive innovations. These developments facilitate the rise of the sharing economy and open for a variety of new entrepreneurial opportunities that businesses can take up. The novel entrepreneurial opportunities, however, imply a paradigmatic shift in the understanding of entrepreneurship. This book combines digital entrepreneurship with the sharing economy. It presents cutting-edge research for scholars and practitioners interested in either one of the topics - digital entrepreneurship or sharing economy - or their connection. The book addresses three major ways to become entrepreneurial in the sharing economy: Digital entrepreneurship through creating novel sharing-economy platforms; Technology entrepreneurship through the exploitation of sharing-economy platforms; and Business model innovation or business model change influenced by the sharing economy. The book also highlights governance questions on digital entrepreneurship in the sharing economy, which are highly relevant for businesses, the economy and society. The book will be of interested to researchers, academics and students in the field of business and entrepreneurship, with a special focus on digital entrepreneurship"--

"This article aims to critically assess the economic growth paradigm, which typically underlies most approaches to regional policymaking for demographic change. While population losses, ageing and outmigration - i.e. phenomena that are addressed as demographic change - have become a matter of urgency for many European regions, most regional economic development theories remain silent about the population decline affecting the economic growth and development prospects of regions. Consequently, regional policies usually rely on the concept of economic growth, yet neglect the complexity and importance of demographic change and how it relates to the economic sphere. Due to this lack in nuance, we argue that regional policymaking fails to design adequate policy support for regions facing persistent demographic change and economic stagnation or decline as a result. Based on these observations, the paper examines a selection of regional economic development theories in search for alternative concepts of growth and development in the context of demographic change. To this aim, globalisation peripheries are introduced as a fruitful conceptual point of reference and, in combination with endogenous regional development theories, discussed as an alternative approach for regional policymaking." ; The political and economic transformation and market opening in Central Eastern Europe (CEE) at the beginning of the 1990s as well as the EU enlargement gave reason for Western European firms in general and Western European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular to increase their activities in these countries. The objective of the study is to explore patterns concerning their market entries, market development, barriers encountered and the potential locational effects of business activities in CEE. The study is based on cases studies in SMEs located in the Federal State of Lower Saxony, which have already entered CEE markets. As theoretical background we use two established models of the internationalization of SMEs, i.e., the process or stage model, and the network approach to internationalization. Our findings suggest, however, that the basic contentions made by these models on the internationalization path of SMEs should be complemented with a broader perspective that takes into consideration a variety of additional factors. As a general tendency, we find nonetheless evidence that the intensity of market entry barriers in CEE has decreased since and, obviously, due to EU enlargement.

Purpose
This paper aims to discuss business incubation to enter foreign markets in Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) countries through the lens of an "international business incubator" (IBI). International market expansion offers huge opportunities for companies to increase their revenue, but there are also challenging tasks such as the establishment of a business company and the occupation of a strategic position abroad. Practitioners consider this process as the act of incubation, but the theoretical discussion lags behind the practice-led debate.
Design/methodology/approach
An illustrative, and theory-led, case study is presented that describes market expansion to BRIC countries through a network-based IBI. The empirical case is an illustrative Danish company with international operations in BRIC countries both with and without an IBI.
Findings
International business incubation represents a process, which can be influenced through an IBI, and business networking during foreign market entry is shaped by IBI brokerage (bridging, bonding and protecting) in different phases. IBI activities that are embedded in business networking support a company's endeavours in getting a foothold and acquiring a strategic position in BRIC markets and facilitates the market penetration.
Research limitations/implications
The IBI's activities to enter foreign markets should be thoroughly managed. Further studies should be conducted with cross-case comparisons and larger samples to reflect on the propositions established.
Originality/value
By linking the business networking theory with the practice-led understanding of business incubation, the study explores an under-conceptualised topic for international business and entrepreneurship scholars. The paper offers an initial understanding of how brokerage interacts with incubation during the entry of new markets.
