AbstractEconomic reform and health care reform were both focal points outlined in President Obama's policy agenda, with increasing pressure to address economic and social insecurity given that President Obama entered office during the Great Recession (2007–09). The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (commonly known as 'Obamacare') successfully passed in March 2010 in the context of the economic crisis. We argue that the strategic framing of the economic crisis, through reasoning and arguments linking health care reform with economic downfall, is important in understanding the successful passage of Obamacare, and that this is reflected through strategic frames in speeches delivered by the President on health care reform. Health care reform has been successful not in spite of but rather because of the economic crisis of 2008, that allowed President Obama to use a strategic frame focusing on costs and economic problems. The two main frames identified are the 'market' and 'rights' frames. President Obama's strategic frames specifically surrounding the economic and cost‐containment priority of health care reform are categorized as a 'market' frame in this article. He used this frame until the passage of the law in 2010, when the frame shifted to 'rights' frames, largely portrayed through anecdotes and focused on the concept of 'access' to care rather than the 'cost' of care. This is observable through tracking speeches and statements made in support of health care reform between 2009 and 2013.

The 13th Annual Conference of the Young Scholars' Forum of the Association for Canadian Studies in German Speaking Countries, entitled "Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers: Canada in the 21st Century," took place at the University of Vienna June 24-26, 2016. This interdisciplinary and bilingual event sought to reflect on Canada's ongoing status as a space of encounters and multiculturalism, but also of separatism and (neo)colonial policies. The organizing team aimed at exploring and discussing Canada's cross-cultural and transnational dimensions; the realities of its histories, geographies, cultures and politics, and, above all, its people and identities that have shaped and transformed it into its current state as a multicultural dominion a mari usque ad mare ("from sea to sea"). For these purposes, the conference brought together 19 postgraduate speakers from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, and the Czech Republic, whose unique backgrounds and presentations spoke to the diversity of the conference theme and the multitude of perspectives that make up Canadian Studies within and beyond Canada.

People in rural and remote areas often experience greater vulnerability and higher health-related risks as a result of complex issues that include limited access to affordable health services and programs. During disruptive events, rural populations face unique barriers and challenges due to their remoteness and limited access to resources, including digital technologies. While social determinants of health have been highlighted as a tool to understand how health is impacted by various social factors, it is crucial to create a holistic framework to fully understand rural health equity. In this commentary, we propose an integrated framework that connects the social determinants of health (SDOH), the political determinants of health (PDOH), the commercial determinants of health (ComDOH), and the corporate determinants of health (CorpDOH) to address health inequity in rural and remote communities in Canada. The goal of this commentary is to situate these four determinants of health as key to inform policy-makers and practitioners for future development of rural health equity policies and programs in Canada.
