Integration of Migrant Populations into Health Monitoring in Germany: Results from a Feasibility Study
In: Survey methods: insights from the field, S. 1-11
ISSN: 2296-4754
Background: Persons with migrant backgrounds (PMB) are considered 'hard to reach'. To sustainably integrate migrant populations into health monitoring in Germany, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has launched the project Improving Health Monitoring in Migrant Populations (IMIRA), providing results on response rates, sample composition and the effectiveness of sequential interventions. Method: A multilingual feasibility study had been conducted in two German federal states, utilizing data from the residents' registry. The target populations were persons with Turkish, Polish, Romanian, Syrian and Croatian citizenship living in Germany (n=9,068). Different modes of
administration and interventions (study hotline, home visits) were used sequentially. To evaluate their usability, an experimental design was applied for
Turkish and Syrian migrants.
Results: Besides the overall response rate of 15.9%, there were different response rates by citizenship, ranging from 8.6% in the Turkish group to
24.3% in the Syrian group. Whereas the online mode, telephone mode and the study hotline showed little differences between the groups, the home visits led to an remarkable increase (+5.4% in the Turkish group; +7.3% in the Syrian group).
Conclusion: The offer of multilingual survey modes and materials is strongly advised. Furthermore, the response rates of some PMB can be increased
by tailored interventions, such as home visits and multilingual face-to-face interviews.
A Review of Reporting Standards in Academic Journals: A Research Note
In: Survey methods: insights from the field

Response rates can be calculated by various means, allowing the researchers the usage of different disposition
codes, which in turn can result in vastly different response rates for the same survey. One of the most comprehensive
reporting conventions is the 'Standard Definitions' by the American Association of Public Opinion Research
(AAPOR), which describes specific definitions of disposition codes and various outcome rates in great detail, allowing
for only a marginal variance of results. In this inquiry, we aim to document the reporting of response rates and other
survey characteristics in recent publications of scientific journals. Our analyses are based on two sample of articles,
which allow a comparison with earlier reviews as well as between different scientific disciplines. Our findings show,
that while there is an overall increase in the reporting of response rates and other defining survey characteristics,
these improvements are from universal. While the AAPOR standard might be considered an established convention
within the survey research community, other disciplines of the social sciences can be considered far more
heterogeneous in their reporting styles. A comparison between social sciences and public health journals reveals
further a mostly similar reporting pattern, with only specific details underreported in the latter.

AbstractA CSF leak is a common complication in spine surgery which is usually closed effectivly by suture and/or epidural patches. There is currently no algorithm to treat a recurrent CSF leak that fails to be closed initially. We describe the case of a recurrent cerebrospinal fluid leak that we have successfully treated using an inlay-onlay dural repair technique.

Ad hoc surveys at the Robert Koch Institute
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) regularly conducts nationally representative cross-sectional studies (KiGGS, DEGS and GEDA) as part of the nationwide health monitoring system. In addition to these health surveys, data is collected in telephone interviews either on specific thematic fields (such as diabetes) or specific groups (such as medical staff) that were not or only insufficiently covered by the larger health surveys. As they are flexible and fast, ad hoc surveys conducted via telephone interviews can respond to specific epidemiological and health political questions. This article describes the procedures applied in ad hoc telephone interview surveys, which were newly introduced as a standardised method in 2017 and are applied by the Laboratory for Health Surveys at the RKI. The article presents the stages of project management such as concept development, establishment of a concept for data protection, questionnaire development, pre-test and field phase, calculation of weighting factors and provision of the final data set. The aim is to describe the process and shed light on the standardised procedures, the reported quality indicators and the breadth of possible scenarios of application. ; Peer Reviewed

German Health Update (GEDA 2019/2020-EHIS) – Background and methodology
Between April 2019 and September 2020, 23,001 people aged 15 or over responded to questions about their health and living conditions for the German Health Update (GEDA 2019/2020-EHIS). The results are representative of the German resident population aged 15 or above. The response rate was 21.6%. The study used a questionnaire based on the third wave of the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS), which was carried out in all EU member states. EHIS consists of four modules on health status, health care provision, health determinants, and socioeconomic variables. The data are collected in a harmonised manner and therefore have a high degree of international comparability. They constitute an important source of information for European health policy and health reporting and are made available by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat). They also form the basis of the Federal Health Reporting undertaken in Germany. Data collection began in April 2019, just under a year before the beginning of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, and continued into its initial phase, as of March 2020. As such, data from the current GEDA wave can also be used to conduct research into the health impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Gesundheitliche Lage in Deutschland in der COVID-19-Pandemie: Zeitliche Entwicklung ausgewählter Indikatoren der Studie GEDA 2019/2020-EHIS - Ein Update
In: Journal of Health Monitoring, Band 7, Heft S3, S. 1-21
