La partie septentrionale du Ghana s'étend dans la savane arborée. Les arbres clairsemés, devenant plus denses au fur et à mesure que l'on se déplace vers le sud et la zone forestière, y sont entourés de vastes surfaces herbeuses. Durant la saison des pluies, qui commence en mars et atteint son sommet en août-septembre, l'herbe pousse haute et verte, après quoi elle se fane, jaunit et dépérit brûlée par le soleil durant la saison sèche qui va de novembre à mars. Cette zone reçoit dans l'ensemble une moyenne annuelle de 100 à 125 cm de pluie, ce qui permet une agriculture extensive, notamment la culture du millet, du maïs, du manioc et de l'igname.
