AbstractPrevious research has found that children's sharing with others relies on fairness norms, but also varies according to their social relationships. The current study focuses on the conflict between fairness and relationship, exploring their impacts across two resource allocation contexts. We used a parallel work task to explore the effect of relationship with different recipients (friend, stranger, or disliked peer) on three allocation patterns (generous, fair, or selfish), when children directly allocated resources (distributive allocation), or applied different procedures to recipients (procedural application). Participants consisted of 123 Chinese children between the ages of 6 and 12. We found that in the distributive allocation context, in which participants directly decided the outcome, children primarily considered their relationship with recipients when dividing resources, not fairness. However, in the procedural application context, in which children could choose different allocation procedures for recipients, children primarily preferred fairness, regardless of social relationship. Moreover, when making distributive allocations, 6‐ to 8‐year‐olds were more selfish toward their disliked peers, whereas 9‐ to 12‐year‐olds tended to be more fair and generous toward their friends and strangers. These findings shed light on the link between social relationship and fairness within different allocation contexts among children of Chinese cultural background.

Abstract
Objective The surgical approach for cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR) is controversial. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the combined anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion (ACDF) and uncovertebrectomy for treatment of CSR.
Methods This is a retrospective case control study. One hundred and forty-six patients with CSR who underwent two different procedures (ACDF alone [group A]) and a combination of ACDF and uncovertebrectomy [group B]) from March 2008 to April 2013 were included. The operation time, blood loss, Visual Analog Scale scores of the neck (VAS-neck) and arm (VAS-arm), Neck Disability Index (NDI) score, 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) score, fusion segment curvature, global cervical curvature, and the rate of surgical complication were evaluated.
Results There were no significant differences in the basic demographic and clinical characteristics between the two groups (p > 0.05). No significant differences were noticed in the fusion segment curvature and global cervical curvature between the two groups (p > 0.05). Whereas the operation time and blood loss in group B were greater than those in group A (p < 0.05), the VAS-neck, VAS-arm, NDI, and SF-36 scores were better in group B (p < 0.05). The surgical complication rate between the two groups was not significantly different (p > 0.05).
Conclusions Clinical efficacy of ACDF plus uncovertebrectomy for the treatment of patients with CSR may be better than that of ACDF alone, but at the expense of more operation time and blood loss.

AbstractThe suspected endocrine disruptor nonylphenol (NP) is closely associated with anthropogenic activities; therefore, studies on this compound have been clustered in urban areas. This study investigated the NP concentrations in drinking water sources (n = 8), terminal tap water (n = 36), and human urine samples (n = 127) collected from urban and rural areas in Wuhan, China. The mean concentrations of NP measured in drinking water sources in urban and rural areas were 92.3 ± 7.5 and 11.0 ± 0.8 ng/L (mean ± SD), respectively, whereas the mean levels in urban and rural tap waters were 5.0 ± 0.7 and 44.2 ± 2.6 ng/L (mean ± SD), respectively. Nevertheless, NP was detected in 74.1% and 75.4% of the human urine samples from urban and rural participants, with geometric mean concentrations of 0.19 ng/mL (0.26 µg/g creat) and 0.27 ng/mL (0.46 µg/g creat), respectively. Although the NP concentrations measured in the drinking water sources of urban areas were significantly higher than those in rural areas (P < 0.05), the tap water and urine NP concentrations measured in urban areas were unexpectedly lower than those of rural areas (P < 0.05). Additionally, this investigation showed that the materials comprising household water supply pipelines and drinking water treatment processes in the two areas were also different. Our results indicated that the levels of exposure to NP in drinking water and human urine in rural areas were not necessarily lower than those in urban areas. Thus, particular attention should be paid to rural areas in future studies of NP.

Organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) have attracted broad attention and become a very energetic field after the emergence of nonfullerene acceptors. Long-lifetime triplet excitons are expected to be good candidates for efficiently harvesting a photocurrent. Parallel with the development of OPVs based on singlet materials (S-OPVs), the potential of triplet materials as photoactive layers has been explored. However, so far, OPVs employing triplet materials in a bulk heterojunction have not exhibited better performance than S-OPVs. Here, the recent progress of representative OPVs based on triplet materials (T-OPVs) is briefly summarized. Based on that, the performance limitations of T-OPVs are analyzed. The shortage of desired triplet materials with favorable optoelectronic properties for OPVs, the tradeoff between long lifetime and high binding energy of triplet excitons, as well as the low charge mobility in most triplet materials are crucial issues restraining the efficiencies of T-OPVs. Despite the advances in the methods for fabricating nanoscale materials, critical issues remain, such as the difficulties encountered in anchoring, and the deterioration in their stability after integration with other components. These issues need to be addressed to further increase the scope of their applicability. In this study, using epitaxial mesoscopic host matrices, materials are spatially confined at the nanoscale, and are supported, anchored, and stabilized. They also exhibit properties distinct from the bulk counterparts proving their high quality nanoscale nature. ZnFe₂O₄ and SrTiO3 are used as the model confined material and host matrix, respectively. The ZnFe₂O₄ phases are spatially confined by the SrTiO₃ mesoscopic matrix and have strongly enhanced ferrimagnetic properties as compared to bulk and plain thin films of ZnFe₂O₄ , with a Curie temperature of ≈500 K. The results of a series of control experiments and characterization measurements indicate that cationic inversion, which originates from the high interface-to-volume ratio of the ZnFe₂O₄ phase in the ZnFe2O4–SrTiO₃ nanocomposite film, is responsible for the magnetization enhancement. An exchange bias is observed, owing to the coexistence of ferrimagnetic and antiferromagnetic regions in the confined ZnFe₂O₄ phase. The magnetic properties are dependent on the ZnFe₂O₄ crystallite size, which can be controlled by the growth conditions. ; Chaewoon Park and Rui Wu contributed equally to this work.
