"In 'Criminaliteit als situationele keuze?' onderneemt de auteur een poging om een van de recentere verklaringsmodellen voor regelovertredend gedrag theoretisch en empirisch te onderzoeken. Het algemene verklaringsmodel dat het voorwerp van onderzoek uitmaakt, is Wikström?s situationele actietheorie die in 2004 het licht zag. Meer dan tien jaar na de oorspronkelijke formulering van de theorie zien we dat de theorie er in geslaagd is om onderzoek te genereren. In het boek worden de ontwikkeling van de theorie en de centrale stellingen ervan besproken op basis van een reeks zelfrapportagestudies en een gerandomiseerde vignetstudie. In de situationele actietheorie staat de wisselwerking tussen individuele eigenschappen en omgevingskenmerken centraal. Dit complexe verklaringsmodel bevat een situationeel model ter verklaring van individuele percepties en keuzes in context en een sociaal ontwikkelingsmodel ter verklaring van het ontstaan van kenmerken die dit 'perceptie-keuzeproces' verklaren. Beide modellen worden onder de loep genomen. Aanvankelijk was er sprake van enkele algemene veronderstellingen, zoals de wisselwerking tussen de neiging om criminaliteit als alternatief te zien en de mate van blootstelling aan criminogene settings en de wisselwerking tussen moraliteit en zelfcontrole. In de loop der jaren werden deze veronderstellingen verder uitgediept onder de vorm van de morele conflicthypothese en de morele overeenstemmingshypothese en veronderstellingen over de 'indirecte oorzaken van criminaliteit"

The present article examines why Swedes cooperate with the police using the framework of the procedural justice theory. This theory assumes that trust in procedural justice and in the effectiveness of the police are important issues in shaping citizens' perceptions of police legitimacy. Additionally, perceived legitimacy is necessary for the recognition of police authority. When citizens recognize the right of the police to exercise authority, they are assumed to feel an obligation to obey the police, and ultimately they will have a greater tendency to cooperate with them. Because of the ongoing discussion about the meaning and conceptualization of the concept of 'legitimacy', some additional ideas are described and are also taken into account in the model that we tested. We used structural equation modelling (SEM) to do the analysis, which was conducted on data available from the European Social Survey (ESS) Round 5. The results indicate that trust in the procedural justice of the police plays an important role in the explanation of citizens' willingness to cooperate with the police through perceptions of moral alignment and feelings of obligation to obey the police. However, there is still a high percentage of individual variance in willingness to cooperate with the police that cannot be explained by the model we tested. The implications of the findings are discussed.

In this study we examined to what extent different combinations of parent–child relationships explain adolescents' moral values and whether the influence of school and peers predicts moral values. We also investigated whether anticipated shame and anticipated guilt predict moral values. A convenience sample of 1,120 adolescents, including 120 adolescents in youth custody, was used. Results suggest that combinations of parent–child relationships do not predict moral values, that school and peers are significant predictors of adolescents' moral values, and anticipated shame and guilt do not consistently and equally predict moral values. Less frequently, these middle-range theoretical frameworks are applied to explain individual differences in political violence. Against a background of growing concern about right-wing political violence among adolescents, the present study examines the role of a number of independent variables derived from different theoretical frameworks in a sample of 2,879 Flemish adolescents. Using blockwise regression models, the independent effects of key independent variables from social control theory, procedural justice theory, general strain theory, social learning theory, and self-control theory are assessed. The results support an integrative approach towards the explanation of political violence. The implications of our findings for future studies on violent extremism are discussed.
