ABSTRACTCurrent research argues that criminal victimization of the elderly is less of a problem than advocates for the elderly have argued it was in the past. The rate of victimization has been empirically demonstrated to be lower than for most other age groups. At the same time, the elderly express high levels of fear regarding criminal victimization. This article seeks to explain this apparent paradox through an "at risk" hypothesis that accounts for both low rates and high fear.

Our goal was to examine drug and non drug offenses and within drug offenses possession and delivery offenses in terms of (1) social characteristics associated with the offenses and (2) treatment by the criminal justice process of offenses by four critical judicial events; seriousness of felony charged, bond status, disposition of the offense, and sentence. Social characteristics for drug and non drug offenses were more alike than different, even though it was very clear that the criminal justice process treated drug offenses quite differently than non drug offenses, and treated delivery differently than possession.
