Political parties play a stabilizing role in any regime through articulation and aggregation of the interests of citizens. The article discusses political parties in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), their ideological spectrum, origins and constraints, elite-mass gap and political instability in the HKSAR among other topics. After the defeat of the "pro-China" candidates in the direct elections held for the Hong Kong Legislative Council (Legeo) in September 1991, political forces, supportive of the policies of the PRC towards Hong Kong, reorganized themselves and prepared for local elections in the run-up to 1997. In 1992, a "pro-China" political party named Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong (DAB) was formed.
