Ports represent the starting and ending point of maritime transport. Representing the meeting points of cargo exchange between maritime and other means of transport, they are an indispensable part of transport-logistic chain. Port also have an important role in development of the surrounding/hosting area from economic, social and environmental aspect. In order to operate successfully, a port must work and act in accordance with sustainability – environmentally, economically and socially responsible. The article presents a case study of sustainable coexistence between an economic subject – cargo port and its natural and social surrounding. Examples of port process and operations improvements in light of sustainable development and harmony with local community will be presented.Keywords: port system, local community, sustainable development

Development aid, one of the most important mechanisms for the redistribution of global wealth, represents financial flows that have economic growth and social improvement as their main objective. It has also frequently been described as an instrument which is able to diminish international migrations and is used by several developed countries. Recently, much empirical evidence and several contributors have argued that connection and set out other grounds. This paper explores the interaction between development aid and migrations from developing to developed countries. We want to determine, if the amount of development aid has any impact on migrations from African, Caribbean, and the Pacific Group of States. Our results show that development aid does not have a direct effect on migrations and therefore, in terms of international migrations, is not effective. Moreover, we will argue that the donor side should use different policies and other mechanisms to manage migrations from those countries.

There are many reasons why Slovenia needs to change its management of network industry infrastructure and question the legacy we wish to pass onto the next generation. However, these issues are not at the forefront of the public debate despite being as relevant today as the pension reform, if not even more. Until now, no government in Slovenia has adopted a systemic approach to infrastructure-related issues; instead, they have let partial interests prevail. This paper and the vision of infrastructure management present a synthesis of the current state of profession and past experiences in infrastructure management and financing acquired by the most developed countries, as well as practical experiences concerning the regulation, financing, and management of network industry infrastructure. The practical experience and empirical findings call for a consistent use of the RAB principles and for the restructuring of certain and partial privatization of all network industries. Foreign experience tells us that if the changes are correctly implemented, the current state of infrastructure can be significantly improved and could lead to a considerable decrease in real infrastructure costs and/or an increase in the availability of funds for infrastructure renovation or expansion. In the future, EU regulations might also expand and raise their requirements to meet the state of the art, but Slovenia need not wait for the EU. The introduction of such a policy would also mean a quantum leap in terms of the competitiveness of Slovenia's economy and bring the country closer to the world's most developed economies.

Abstract

Background and Purpose: Existing literature on the Industry 4.0 concept does not provide a clear empirical verification if and how the implementation of Industry 4.0 impacts export market orientation, market diversification, and export performance of firms. The purpose of this paper is to provide a framework on how firms can increase their export performance by knowing the impact of Industry 4.0 on firms' export activities.

Methodology: The analysis is based on an examination of 81 Slovenian export firms, with the majority active in the processing industry in which the export of products and services represents a more than 20% share in the total revenue of the firm. Factor analysis and multiple regression were used to process the collected data.

Results: The analysis results reveal that firms that invest in advanced technologies and realize digital transformation are better prepared to compete internationally and achieve better export performance.

Conclusion: Our study showed the positive link between implementation of Industry 4.0 and export activities of firms and confirmed that implementation of Industry 4.0 leads to many changes in the mindset and operation of Slovenian firms and actively reflects in their export results. The research findings may serve as an important guide for managers in the optimal planning and management of export marketing and business activities. The study thus provides a foundation for the growing research on the relationship between Industry 4.0 and export business activities of firms.

In this paper we explore the effects of a diagonal cumulation of origin as the EU's Common Commercial Policy (CCP) incentive mechanism that affects the intraregional trade and transaction cost structure of firms engaged in cross-border business operation. The research explores how firms should frame their cross-border physical flows of goods and the configuration of their value-adding processes for taking advantage of diagonal cumulation of origin. The empirical analysis is based on an in-depth case study of effects of the 'SAP+ diagonal cumulation of origin' on changes in the transaction cost structure of a selected Slovenian firm operating within the household-appliance sector in one of the Western Balkan Countries. Based on eligibility of local subsidiary for using origin of goods in its import/exporttransactions the cost calculations were made for its products and then three different business scenarios were developed for showing the effects of the mechanism on transaction cost changes of a firm. The paper concludes that, at the conceptual level, the mechanism of diagonal cumulation of origin may serve as an effective institutional cross-border trade-promoting tool. ; U ovom radu istražujemo dijagonalnu kumulaciju porijekla kao institucionalni mehanizam zajedničke trgovinske politike EU za poticanje intra-regionalne trgovine, a koja može istovremeno pogodno utjecati i na strukturu transakcijskih troškova poduzeća. Ovaj rad izučava implikacije ovog mehanizma za transakcijske troškove poduzeća u međunarodnom poslovanju osobito iz perspektive načina na koje mogu poduzeća konfigurirati vlastite prekogranične fizičke robne tokove i procese za kreiranje dodane vrijednosti kako bi mogla iskoristiti efekte dijagonalne kumulacije porijekla. Empirijsko istraživanje je provedeno bilo pomoću detaljne studije slučaja na temelju simulacije efekata 'SAP dijagonalne kumulacije porijekla' na promjene u strukturi transakcijskih troškova određenog slovenskog poduzeća u sektoru proizvodnje kućanskih aparata u jednoj od država Zapadnog Balkana. Na temelju statusa lokalne podružnice kao korisnika koncesije porijekla robe u njenim izvozno/uvoznim transakcijama napravljene su kalkulacije troškova za njene proizvode kao osnova za simulaciju tri scenarija učinaka mehanizma porijekla na promjene transakcijskih troškova poduzeća. U radu se zaključuje, da na konceptualnoj razini mehanizam dijagonalne kumulacije porijekla može poslužiti kao efikasan institucionalni mehanizam za poticanje prekogranične trgovine.
