Deliberative democracy is a field dominated by English-language scholars, &, as noted here, has been late to be adopted by contemporary continental thinkers, & contemporary French thinkers in particular. This article aims to situate some of the central concepts in this political philosophy & the conditions of its development. After briefly presenting grounds for analytic proximity between deliberative & participative approaches, two perspectives are presented which entail both sociological & political attitudes & their role in the institutionalization of the deliberative/participative norm. The first of these, the idealist perspective, is characterized by mixing pragmatic arguments & normative arguments in favor of deliberation. Secondly, the "ultra-critical" perspective claims that in the context of structural social inequalities, deliberation can be only a falsity or a screen before all types of domination. Ultimately, to take the deliberative norm seriously, it would require supporting the hypothesis that the real-world implementation of deliberative context would produce tangible results on the part of involved actors regardless of whether or not they had interiorized this norm. In conclusion, the principle points in a foundation for sociological analysis examining the actual presence & validity of these effects is developed here. 55 References. C. Brunski

(ICE2)
