Earlier research on public journalism has found a paradox: the intent to perform public journalism has a more obvious effect than the reality of its practice. We sought to find a third variable, one occurring earlier in time, which predicts both the intent to do public journalism & the corresponding benefits to communities. We found it in the attitudes of the corporation heads of publicly reporting newspaper companies. Because these are past attitudes & because the population is difficult to interview, normal opinion measurement was not practical. Instead, we looked at the texts of these executives' annual messages to shareholders to see if their content would differentiate between concern for profit & concern for social responsibility. It did. Coding of the text was done by computer to eliminate reliability concerns. The resulting indicator, measuring the balance between profit & social concerns over a period from 1970 to 1996, significantly predicted which newspaper companies would become identified with the public journalism movement in the 1990s. 2 Tables, 7 References. This paper investigates the impact that economies of scale have had in the success of the wind industry in the United States since 1980 including the trend to larger wind turbines and wind farms and assembly learning curve effects. Analyses utilize average U.S. wind industry historical data to assess past performance and predict the future economic potential for both onshore and offshore wind turbine industries. The intent of this analysis is to serve as a case study to demonstrate the importance of selecting the right product design platform and how the ability to scale a technology can impact the success of products and, in this case, an entire multi-billion dollar industry. From the early stages of development, the wind industry recognized this opportunity and enabled the commercialization of larger and larger wind turbines and subsequently exploited the significant economies of scale possible in producing low-cost electricity via large, horizontal axis turbines and associated wind plants. The cost to produce electricity was reduced more than six-fold over this timeframe and is competitive today with conventional fossil-fuel power generation alternatives. The physics of horizontal axis wind turbines enables them to scale up disproportionately in electric power output and annual energy production with increased size/nameplate rating.

This book intends to provide leading research in the area of empirical Internet forecasting, demand analysis, pricing and planning. The purpose of this book is to educate the reader about how traditional analytic techniques can be used to access Internet growth and how new approaches can better address the pricing, planning and regulatory issues of Internet growth. The research presented focuses on forecasts of Internet access and applications and planning and pricing tools for telecommunication providers. The scope of this volume includes residential demand for Internet access and applications, Internet pricing and regulatory policy, and new analytical forecasting techniques. The book addresses some of the most critical questions facing the industry such as the impact of data communications on traditional voice networks, growth rates for Internet usage and access, pricing and planning for network growth. With the magnitude of changes affecting the telecommunications industry, there is a critical need for research addressing demand analysis and forecasting. Industry personnel, regulators and policymakers are all looking to understand new services, new techniques, and new ways to succeed in an ever-changing environment. This book fills some of the void in research addressing these crucial problems

The aim of this book, Future of the Telecommunications Industry: Forecasting and Demand Analysis, is to describe leading research in the area of empirical telecommunications demand analysis and forecasting in the light of tremendous market and regulatory changes. Its purpose is to educate the reader about how traditional analytic techniques can be used to assess new telecommunications products and how new analytic techniques can better address existing products. The research presented focuses on new products such as Internet access and additional lines and new techniques such as hazard modeling, adaptive forecasting and neural networks. The scope of this volume includes new telecommunications products, new analytical techniques, and a review of market changes in the US and other countries. Some of the most critical questions facing the industry are addressed here, such as the impact of competition, customer churn, rate re-balancing, and early assessment of new products. The research includes a variety of different countries, products and analytic tools
