The language choice at institutions of the European Union has been investigated in numerous studies examining such aspects as the European language constellation, institutional multilingualism and its possible reforms, linguistic capital and symbolic domination, and European identity related to the EU enlargement. In addition to these, studies researching the (language) practices at a specific EU institution, like the European Parliament, or analyzing EU organizational discursive practices have also been carried out. These studies, however, offer no insight into the way actors in EU institutions deal with multilingualism in their work place while producing texts for these institutions. It is for this reason that I decided to conduct a case study at the European Parliament to examine how advisers belonging to various political groups, despite their different national culture and distinct mother tongues, together succeed in producing what they call "panacea texts". Finally, a possible new language constellation for the EU is discussed.

AbstractChatGPT-3, based on a large language model created by OpenAI, capable of generating human-like text, has been open to the public since November 2022. Since 2023, ChatGPT-3 has become a much-discussed educational writing tool. We elaborate on what we mean by referring to ChatGPT-3 as an educational assistant and define moral hazard. Then, we put this writing tool, as an extension of human capabilities, in a historical perspective with an analysis of Plato's critical stance on writing in Phaedrus. After having analysed ChatGPT-3's current representations in the media and academia, we ask ChatGPT-3 whether its writing tool should be considered an educational assistant or a moral hazard and if it could reflect on the similarity, if any, between Plato's critical stance and ChatGPT-3 as a writing tool and comment on ChatGPT-3's answers. Finally, we compare these to Plato's main arguments with regard to writing and draw a number of conclusions.

This article investigates the changes in the use of traditional and new media by different technology generations. Focusing on the changes in the use of Email, Chat and Social Network Sites by older people, it explores the process by which new media become 'old' and reach a saturation point. Collected survey data suggest differences in media use between the three technology generations distinguished in this study: the 'mechanical' generation (born in 1938 or before), the 'household revolution' generation (born between 1939 and 1948), and the 'technology spread' generation (born between 1949 and 1963). This longitudinal and transnational study provides evidence of media saturation, showing that an increase in both the availability of and access to media does not lead to an increase in use, even in older adults who are behind in the adoption of the new media. Finally, the article discusses the findings, arguing for an interplay between individual and structural lag in later life.

This study evaluated the playability of an online escape game designed using a User-Centred Design (UCD) process for older adult players aged 65 and older. The participants were 30 Dutch older adults who played the game in pairs on tablets over 15 game sessions. The data were collected through surveys, interviews, and observation field notes. The results indicated that, overall, the players enjoyed the game. They enjoyed the collaborative nature of the game and the game challenges the most. They also thought that the game story is engaging. However, the evaluation revealed that the game controller was a source of frustration and that the goals of several of the game tasks were not clear for the players. Moreover, it seems that the game needs to be customizable so that each pair of players could determine the pace and difficulty level of the game.

The 'aging well' discourse advances the idea of making older people responsible for their capability to stay healthy and active. In the context of an increased ageing population, which poses several challenges to countries' government, this discourse has become dominant in Europe. We explore the way older people are visually represented on websites of organizations for older people in seven European countries (Finland, UK, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Poland and Romania), using an analytical approach based on visual content analysis, inspired by the dimensional model of national cultural differences from the Hofstede model (1991; 2001; 2011). We used two out of the five Hofstede dimensions: Individualism/Collectivism (IDV) and Masculinity/Femininity (MAS). The results demonstrated that in all seven countries older people are mostly visually represented as healthy/active, which reflects a dominant 'ageing well' discourse in Europe. The results also demonstrated that in most cases older people tend to be represented together with others, which is not consonant with the dominant 'ageing well' discourse in Europe. A last finding was was that the visual representation of older people is in about half of the cases in line with these Hofstede dimensions. We discuss the implications of these findings claiming that the ageing well discourse might lead to "visual ageism". Organizations could keep this in mind while using pictures for their website or in other media and consider to use various kind of pictures, or to avoid using pictures of older people that stigmatize, marginalize or injure. They could look into the cultural situatedness and intersectional character of age relations and consider alternative strategies of both visibility and invisibility to talk with and about our ageing societies.
