Validates the explanation that older & less-educated respondents (Rs) are difficult to interview because they do not have sufficient communicative skills, drawing on transcripts of secondary interview data from 257 married women. To determine Rs' cognitive & communicative skills, behavioral coding of the R-interviewer interaction is used. It is found that most Rs have enough skills to accomplish their role. However, there is a small group of older & less-educated Rs who have insufficient skills. 4 Tables, 15 References. Adapted from the source document.
This paper examines whether any change can be observed in the attitude of young people towards immigrants. The data were collected in Flanders at three points in time (spring 1991,1992 and 1994) among 20-21-year-olds. A general analysis of the social context plus findings from earlier research are not sufficient to enable a clear projection to be formulated regarding such a change in attitude. The analysis was carried out using simultaneous latent class analysis. According to the results of this analysis there are few indications of any change having taken place in the attitude of young people. The level of education of the young people interviewed is the feature which exhibits the strongest correlation with their attitude to immigrants.
In this article a typology of respondent's ability to participate in a survey interview is created by means of a latent class analysis. The indicators in the analysis are: the interviewer's evaluation of the respondent's ability, the use of the "don't know" response category and inconsistent answers. It was possible to fit a latent class model with three classes or types of respondents. The three types are clearly differentiated concerning ability. As expected, this typology is related to respondent's education and age. Ability to participate is higher for better educated and younger respondents. Given the fact that political preference is also related to these two background characteristics, there is a relationship between the respondent's typology and the political preference of the respondents.
Abstract When assessing interview response quality to identify potentially low-quality interviews, both numerical and categorical response quality indicators (mixed indicators) are usually available. However, research on how to use them simultaneously is very rare. In the current article, we extend the application of conventional multivariate control charts to include response quality indicators that are of a mixed type. We analyze data from the eighth round of the European Social Survey in Belgium, characterized by six numerical and two categorical response quality indicators. First, we employ a principal component analysis mix procedure (PCA Mix) to transform the mixed quality indicators into principal components. The principal component scores are subsequently used to construct a Hotelling T2 statistic. To deal with the non-multivariate normal nature of the principal component scores obtained from the PCA Mix, a nonparametric bootstrap method is then applied to calculate the control limit for the T2 statistic. Second, we suggest tools to interpret an identified outlier in terms of finding the responsible original indicator(s). Third, we present a cyclic procedure for determining the "in-control" data, by iteratively removing the outliers until the process is considered as being in control. Lastly, we identify the most important indicators that discriminate the outliers from the in-control data. Our results imply that multivariate control charts based on relevant projection tools such as PCA Mix in combination with the bootstrap technique have great potential for use in evaluating interview response quality and identifying outliers.
In 2010 the European Social Survey included a module on public trust in national police and criminal courts. The included questions were especially susceptible to item nonresponse. This study examines the interviewer and country variability in responding "I don't know" to these questions using a beta-binomial logistic mixed model, controlling for demographic background variables. The results show that there are large differences between interviewers and countries which are not due to underlying demographic differences between the respondents. The difference in data quality between interviewers and countries make (inter)national comparisons more difficult. More importantly, we could assume that these missing values could be avoided with sound data collection methods and interviewer trainings.
Researchers have been looking for easily accessible and straightforwardly useable paradata and auxiliary data to improve survey data. Lately, there is also attention for the evaluation and validation of this external data, such as the assessment of the quality of interviewer-generated paradata. For these purposes, we investigated how useful Google Street View can be as auxiliary data and whether it allows us to assess the quality of interviewer observations on the houses and neighbourhoods of sample units. Additionally, we test whether Google Maps can inform us about the reachability of sample units and which data can predict non-response better. Although it is rather simple to use Google Maps and Street View in daily life, using it to code auxiliary data for surveys is more challenging than expected. Hence, this paper also offers a thorough discussion of the pitfalls of coding these auxiliary data as well as their current solutions.
"In this paper, we focus on interviewer effects in the European Social Survey, and seek to demonstrate that academic publications seldom take these effects into consideration. An analysis is provided of interviewer effects for 48 continuous items, covering 36 countries in six rounds. The analysis does not only deal with the means of variables. Using multilevel covariance structure analysis, interviewer effects on the relationships between these variables is also assessed. Results indicate that first, countries showing considerable interviewer effects regarding means are also more at risk regarding regression coefficients and second, ignoring interviewer effects leads to an overestimation of the effect size of the relationships between variables and an underestimation of standard errors."
