AbstractThis review focuses on Latina and African‐American girls in the juvenile justice system with a special emphasis on their mental health, substance abuse, and treatment needs. Like many young women in the juvenile justice system, Latina and African‐American girls often have histories of neglect, abuse, and trauma, which contribute to later mental health and substance abuse issues. Despite these histories, juvenile justice professionals sometimes rely on stereotypes rooted in cultural deficit thinking to explain Latina and African‐American girls' delinquency. Relying on gendered, racialized, and classed stereotypes and assumptions can result in decisions that negatively impact Latina and African‐American girls' access to mental health, substance abuse, and other types of treatment. Policy and practice implications for better addressing the needs of Latina and African‐American girls are discussed.

This qualitative study explored 18 high-risk adolescent Latinas' perceptions of their relationships with nonresident fathers. A number of interrelated factors—early childhood memories, mothers' interpretations, and fathers' behaviors—shaped girls' perceptions, which in turn, influenced how they interacted with fathers. Some girls struggled to make sense of fathers' diminished involvement and continued to long for them. Others grew angry and refused to have anything to do with hostile and aggressive fathers. Some girls never knew or did not remember their fathers, and they were largely indifferent. In contrast, other girls were conflicted and shifted back and forth between being angry with fathers, longing for them, and attempting to assume an air of indifference. Only one girl noted that she had a positive, loving relationship with her father. Implications for study findings are discussed.

Problems associated with poor quality parent‐child relationships are compounded for incarcerated girls. Using attachment theory as a framework, the present qualitative study examined how 18 incarcerated adolescent girls made meaning with regard to their parents' drug use. We found that 8 of the 18 girls used drugs with their parents as a relational strategy to be close with them, particularly with their fathers, or as a means to share time together. The unique finding that girls used drugs together with their parents supports the need for relational parenting interventions that, whenever possible, support, encourage, and provide treatment and family strengthening services to parents who use drugs and their children.

Parental monitoring serves as a key element in the reduction of adolescent substance use, but little is known about how various monitoring practices relate to different levels of use. This study examined the association between two forms of parental monitoring (parental knowledge and parental supervision) and two substance use outcomes (alcohol and marijuana) for Hispanic and non-Hispanic White eighth graders using the Arizona Youth Survey (n = 11,703). Results demonstrated that parental supervision and parental knowledge protected against alcohol and marijuana use for both ethnic groups, but tests for ethnic differences indicated that parental supervision was more protective against high levels of marijuana use for White youth compared to Hispanic youth. Gender differences were also observed with girls benefitting more from both forms of monitoring compared to boys. However, these effects were dependent on the level of substance use involvement and the substance use outcome.
