Wu et al. -- 7 pags., 6 figs. ; The β-decay half-lives of 94 neutron-rich nuclei Cs144-151, Ba146-154, La148-156, Ce150-158, Pr153-160, Nd156-162, Pm159-163, Sm160-166, Eu161-168, Gd165-170, Tb166-172, Dy169-173, Ho172-175, and two isomeric states Er174m, Dy172m were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory, providing a new experimental basis to test theoretical models. Strikingly large drops of β-decay half-lives are observed at neutron-number N=97 for Ce58, Pr59, Nd60, and Sm62, and N=105 for Eu63, Gd64, Tb65, and Dy66. Features in the data mirror the interplay between pairing effects and microscopic structure. r-process network calculations performed for a range of mass models and astrophysical conditions show that the 57 half-lives measured for the first time play an important role in shaping the abundance pattern of rare-earth elements in the solar system. ; This work was carried out at the RIBF operated by RIKEN Nishina Center, RIKEN and RCNP, Osaka University. The β decays Mn68→Fe68, Mn69→Fe69 and Mn70→Fe70 have been measured at the RIBF facility at RIKEN using the EURICA γ spectrometer combined with an active stopper consisting of a stack of Si detectors. The nuclei were produced as fission fragments from a beam of 238U at a bombarding energy of 345 MeV/nucleon impinging on a Be target and selected using the BigRIPS separator. Half-lives and β-delayed neutron emission probabilities have been extracted for these decays, together with first experimental information on excited states populated in 69,70Fe. The data indicate a continuously increasing deformation for Fe isotopes up to A=70. This is interpreted, as for Cr isotopes, in terms of the interplay between the quadrupole correlations of the ν1d5/2 and ν0g9/2 orbitals and the monopole component of the π0f7/2-ν0f5/2 interaction. ; The project is co-financed by the European Union and the European Social Fund. The β decay of the N = 83 nucleus ¹³¹Cd has been studied at the RIBF facility at the RIKEN Nishina Center. The main purpose of the study was to identify the position of the 1p₃/₂ and 0 f₅/₂ proton-hole states and the energies of core-excited configurations in the semi-magic nucleus ¹³¹In. From the radiation emitted following the ββ decay, a level scheme of ¹³¹In was established and the β feeding to each excited state determined. Similarities between the single-particle transitions observed in the ββ decays of the N = 83 isotones ¹³²In and ¹³¹Cd are discussed.
