AbstractCuba has a special role in Alexander von Humboldt's American travel narrative: Humboldt's experience of colonial slave economy drives his optimistic philosophy, inspired by European Enlightenment, into a crisis, and brings to surface the inherent contradictions of his discourse. This phenomenon is particularly interesting from the perspective of literary criticism: Alexander von Humboldt conceives Cuba as a poetic space, where contradictions and ambivalences coexist. Already on the boat to the island from Venezuela he creates destablizing effects of sensual perceptions. He stages his landing in Havana as a moment of oppositional impressions. Within the symbolic topography of his geographic fantasy, Cuba functions as an imaginary in-between space. And Humboldt's philosophical and aesthetic terminology undergoes a semantic recoding in Cuba: what was once used in a philosophical and aesthetic sense, now has become charged with an economic and political meaning. ; AbstractCuba has a special role in Alexander von Humboldt's American travel narrative: Humboldt's experience of colonial slave economy drives his optimistic philosophy, inspired by European Enlightenment, into a crisis, and brings to surface the inherent contradictions of his discourse. In 1829, Alexander von Humboldt went on an expedition to Asia. The German naturalist's second great journey is in many ways complementary to his American voyage of 1799-1804.

Alexander von Humboldt went on an expedition through Russia and Siberia in 1829, which led him to the Chinese border. This second great journey of the German naturalist was in many respects complementary to his American expedition of 1799–1804. In Russia, Humboldt travelled and researched under political pressure. On the one hand he reported to the Russian government on his inspections in the mining industry and on the other hand he wrote letters to his brother about slavery and surveillance. Humboldt's work on Central Asia (1843) shows subtle methods of indirect criticism. Here he describes how inefficient energy production in a state-owned and serf-driven economy destroys the environment and causes man-made climate change.

; Alexander von Humboldt became world-famous during his American voyage (1799-1804). His last and most popular book, Kosmos, represents the entire world in five volumes (1845-1862). In a key chapter (1847) Humboldt narrates the history of knowledge as a history of violence. He diagnoses a dialectics of exploration and appropriation since Greek and Roman Antiquity. Conceived after the Latin American Revolution of Independence, Kosmos is the first contribution of German literature to post-colonial theory. From this political perspective, we can even understand the hybrid poetics of Humboldt's work. In Kosmos, a large number of formats and sub-formats confusingly proliferate, apparently imitating tropical vegetation. This dissolution of a systematic, centered form, following the recognition of research as a colonial activity, however, is rather the effect of Humboldt's self-critical insight into the connection between Science and Empire. He gave up the project of authorially representating the world, and instead artistically demonstrated its failure.

Abstract
While there has been considerable discussion on "figurative" language in the larger sense, especially on cognitive aspects of metaphor, this article describes an interdisciplinary experiment which focuses on the narrower and more technical definition of figurality, i.e. on rhetorical figures as formal patterns of sound or composition (such as alliteration or anaphora) as opposed to rhetorical tropes as methods of indirect signification (such as metaphor or metonymy). In line with Greek and Roman theory on the threefold function of rhetorical language (lógos, páthos, éthos; docere, movere, conciliare) we hypothesize that figures have persuasive, affective and aesthetic effects on the reader of a text that can be determined individually as well as cumulatively. The experimental study is specifically devoted to the reception of rhetorical figures in political speeches, taking Barack Obama's "Acceptance Speech" as an example. By 'de-activating' hundreds of figures in a single text, without affecting its imagery or semantics, we are able to measure differentially the degrees by which these figures enhance the effects on the recipients. In an additional experiment, we investigate how they condition the memorability of a text or its content. On the basis of classical theory (Gorgias, Aristotle, Cicero, Quintilian), integrating psychology and neuroscience, psychiatry and psychotherapy, we aim at defining an interdisciplinary research agenda for empirical and experimental as well as intercultural rhetoric.
In his controversial first book In Stahlgewittern (1920) Ernst Jünger ascribes meaning to World War I not explicitly in ideological terms, as much as indirectly by using a highly metaphorical language. Jünger codes war in 32 image sequences in the fields of nature, human practice, culture, and anthropomorphism. Jünger's metaphors can be differentiated into various categories and characterized by their density, their relation, their interference and their variation. When two warring fractions, then, are described by the same iconic motifs, their oppositions seem to vanish. And when metaphors are confronted with their real referents, with signifying names and stereotyped jargons, their artificial character and epistemological function come to light. The implicit meanings these metaphors generate should not be simplified as celebratory aestheticising, nor refuted as fascist ideology. The individual codes are unequally subtle, they generate different semantics and they connote deviating political positions; they intersect and conflict. In Stahlgewittern they are both an expression of an ideological attitude as well as a symptom of profound unsettlement.

; "Like antique bronze statues" - Dissolving classicism in Alexander von Humboldt's Relation historique du Voyage aux Régions équinoxiales du Nouveau Continent. The "antiquization" of America, using classicist motifs as imperial models of appropriation, is a central rhetorical strategy in Alexander von Humboldt's travelogue. Over the course of the colonial experience this discourse is infused with tension: metaphoric and metonymic types of references collide; positive and negative connotations are superimposed; incompatible modes of temporalization are contrasted; colonial as well as dissident identifications are laid out. The concept of "antiquity" is de-authorized, deconstructed. Readers witness the dissolution of European classicism as a politico-aesthetic 'dispositif' due to contact with cultural difference.
