This article contributes to the scholarship on queer migration by exploring the translation of knowledge as a concept and process whereby social, cultural and epistemic histories and structures are negotiated. Drawing on my own experiences of engaging in ethnographic fieldwork and qualitative interviews with queer asylum seekers in Denmark, I reflect on ways of translating knowledge by focusing on the epistemological, methodological and affective dimensions of research relations. By reflecting on my own position as an epistemological translator, I follow the ways in which affective intimacies emerge in embodied encounters and how these intimacies are constrained and made possible by institutional norms, bodies and spaces. My central argument, drawing on autoethnography, affect theories and decolonial perspectives, suggests epistemic translation as a method of navigating affective intimacies and encounters in research relations. This approach may support a critical reflection of differing positionalities and moments of untranslatability within knowledge production.

The article is based on qualitative interviews with queer asylum seekers in Denmark. Drawing on the concept of necropolitics, the article considers how the politics of truth within the asylum system manage life and death not only by the rejection and deportation of applicants, but also by exposing applicants to a slow death in the temporalities of a prolonged process of seeking asylum. The politics of truth within the asylum system appear to be predicated on ideals of normalised national white queerness and homonormativity that come to determine queer asylum seekers' legitimacy and access to inclusion. Queer migrants' paths to protection play out in a geopolitical context where the hope of life, asylum and citizenship are infused with deathly practices and normative imaginaries of truthful queerness.

Individuals engaging in same-sex acts, individuals identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/ or intersex (LGBTI), and individuals who do not conform to heteronormative ideals of gender and sexuality experience structural, institutional and individual discrimination and exclusion across the world. This is no different in Southern African countries. While LGBTI individuals are heterogeneous and face very specific challenges based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, race, class, ethnicity and other factors, they share experiences of structural, institutional and individual discrimination and marginalisation based on their sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). In most Southern African countries, same-sex activity remains criminalised, which further marginalises LGBTI individuals, and acts as an additional barrier to accessing public services and realising full civil and political rights. This contemporary literature review focuses on the state of LGBTI human rights in 10 Southern African countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The purpose of this review is to contribute towards a strong evidence base and scientific foundation for informed programming in the region.
