AbstractThe article addresses the question of how individuals with non‐standard work or family histories fare under different national pension systems in terms of their individual and household income in old age. It provides a comprehensive overview of the relationship of life course with later life individual and household income, and thereby goes beyond previous research that either focuses on one or the other. Life history data for 12 European countries of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) are used to examine old age individual and household income of individuals (a) with non‐standard working histories (e.g., non‐standard employment or unemployment), (b) with family instabilities (e.g., divorce or single parenthood). The results show that non‐employment and low‐status employment are old age income risks for both genders. Having children represents a burden for household income and for women's individual income only if associated with employment interruptions. Cross‐national variation is stronger for the relationship of old age income with the employment history than with the fertility history. Especially Beveridge‐plus countries that provide unconditional basic pension schemes mitigate previous life course inequality.

This study develops an empirically based typology of life course regimes using data on life histories of individuals in 14 European countries from the third wave of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARELIFE). The concept of life course policy serves as a theoretical basis to describe the impact of welfare state regime differences and long-term historical developments on the structure of individual employment histories. Sequence and cluster analysis are applied to generate aggregate life course indicators for the degree of labour market inclusion, the degree of career volatility and the heterogeneity of employment histories. The resulting life course regime typology is only partly consistent with commonly applied welfare state typologies. Contrary to these, the life course regime typology also reflects long-term economic and political developments in the countries under examination. Large variation exists within the 'Conservative' and the 'Post-Socialist' welfare state types with regard to the standardisation and gender inequality of careers.

Der Verfasser analysiert das individuelle Risiko der Altersarmut beim Übergang in den Ruhestand anhand der Längsschnittdaten des deutschen Soziooekonomischen Panels und des Britischen Haushalts-Panels. Die empirischen Ergebnisse zeigen Unterschiede zwischen Deutschland und Großbritannien - dort ist das Armutsrisiko beim Renteneintritt höher - aber auch Gemeinsamkeiten, trotz der verschiedenen institutionellen Arrangements in den beiden Ländern. Die durch die bereits beschlossenen Reformen erfolgende Annäherung des deutschen Systems an das britische wird sich in den kommenden Jahren in steigenden Armutsquoten statistisch niederschlagen. Affirmative action policies (AAP) polarise the public debate in Western democracies as they involve favouring one candidate at the cost of others because of their group membership. Against this backdrop, we ran a factorial survey experiment in Denmark, France and Germany on the introduction of a hypothetical regulation favouring women and immigrants with equal qualifications in the recruitment process for a management position (N = 4264; YouGov online panel). Our data show that support for AAP for women is significantly greater than for immigrants in all three countries. Moreover, support for AAP is much higher in France than in Germany and Denmark. Germans and Danes show similar low support for AAP for immigrants, while support for AAP for women is higher in Germany than Denmark. We conducted multilevel regression models to investigate the power of several attitudinal factors in explaining target group and country differences. Results show that respondents' varying levels of ethnic and gender prejudice and perceived disadvantage entirely explain target group differences in support for AAP. Furthermore, differences between Germany and Denmark in the support of AAP for women are explained by different levels of prejudices and perceived disadvantage, and attitudes towards state intervention. However, these attitudinal variables cannot explain why support for AAP is much higher in France.

Recent societal developments such as the significant increase in female employment or digitalization challenge existing working time regimes. As part of its 2017/18 collective bargaining position, the IG Metall demanded a right to reduce working hours with partial wage compensation by the employer. Using data from the German Internet Panel we address the question of which groups among the working population support this demand. Our analysis proves the existence of traditional conflict lines: union members are in favour of the demand, while high earners and self-employed reject it. However, based on theoretical assumptions on value change, we argue that a second conflict line between libertarian and conservative values is important. Results show that support for this demand is influenced by individual preferences for a better work-life balance, especially high among young people and supporters of the Green party. This is an example of the union's attempts to broaden its member base. Additionally, our analysis can contribute to the discussion of reduced working hours in the context of the Corona pandemic imposed short-time work.

Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten in der Bevölkerung hinsichtlich der Sorgen vor einer Ansteckung mit dem Coronavirus in den drei Alltagssituationen Arztbesuch, Einkauf und Arbeit. Während ältere Menschen vor allem beim Einkaufen besorgt sind, haben Personen mit Vorerkrankungen auch bei Arztbesuchen und bei der Arbeit erhöhte Sorgen vor einer Ansteckung. Besonders in frauendominierten Berufen wie im Gesundheits- und Bildungsbereich sind die Ansteckungssorgen deutlich ausgeprägt. Die Möglichkeit ganz oder auch nur teilweise von zu Hause arbeiten zu können, geht mit verringerten Ansteckungssorgen einher. Allerdings ist diese Möglichkeit ungleich verteilt. Beispielsweise haben Personen mit Vorerkrankungen keine höhere Wahrscheinlichkeit von zu Hause zu arbeiten.
Abstract: Concerns about Infection with the Corona Virus in Everyday Situations. What are the Differences in the Population?
This article examines differences in the population with regard to concerns about an infection with the Corona virus in the three everyday situations doctor's visit, shopping, and work. While older people are more concerned when shopping, people with pre-existing diseases also have heightened concerns about infection during doctoral appointments and at work. Concerns about infection at work are particularly pronounced in female-dominated occupations, such as health care and education. Working exclusively from home or even just partially helps to reduce worries. However, the possibility to work from home is unevenly distributed. For example, individuals with pre-existing conditions are not more likely to work from home.

Zusammenfassung
Unser Beitrag analysiert Erwerbsverläufe von Paaren in 23 europäischen Ländern und geht der Frage nach, in welchen Zusammenhang Paarlebensläufe mit dem Risiko von späterer Altersarmut stehen. Dazu verwenden wir im ersten Schritt die Lebenslaufdaten des Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) für eine Multichannel-Sequenzmusteranalyse von n=8741 Paaren. Auf Grundlage dieser Analyse identifizieren wir acht Typen von Paar­lebensläufen, die ein Spektrum von Konstellationen des männlichen Hauptverdieners (Male Breadwinner) bis hin zu Doppelverdienern (Dual Earner) abdecken sowie Paare mit atypischen Verläufen beinhalten. Im zweiten Schritt berechnen wir für diese Typen von Paarlebensläufen relative Armutsrisiko­quoten basierend auf dem bedarfsgewichteten, kaufkraftstandardisierten Haushaltseinkommen. Unsere Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Armutsrisiken sich vor allem auf selbstständige Paare und Haushalte mit einem männlichen Hauptverdiener konzentrieren.
Abstract: Couples' Employment Biographies and Poverty Risks in Later Life
In this article, we analyze the association between couples' employment bio­graphies and poverty risk in later life across 23 European countries. In a first step, we apply Multichannel Sequence Analysis to couples' retrospective life-course data from the Survey of Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe (n=8741 couples). Here, we identify eight distinct clusters of couples' employment biographies, covering Male Breadwinner and Dual Earner constellations, as well as atypical trajectories. Subsequently, we assess clusters' respective risk of poverty based on the purchasing power parity adjusted household incomes. Poverty risks are especially associated with self-employed couples, as well as households relying predominantly on a Male Breadwinner.

We provide the first cross-national comparative study of citizens' support for affirmative action policies in the economy using the example of gender quotas for company boards. In contrast to previous studies, we focus on the contextual level and analyse how factors related to political institutions and actors, and economic and social structure shape citizens' support and the gap in support between men and women. We apply multilevel regression analyses of Eurobarometer data for 27 European countries. Levels of support and gender gaps in support for boardroom quotas vary largely between countries. Contextual factors related to existing quota laws, gender equality in social and economic life, and public opinion towards state intervention are important determinants of cross-national variation. Our results point to an ambiguous relationship of support for gender quotas and actual gender equality in a country. Citizens' endorsement of quotas is low in countries with high levels of formal gender equality. Support is higher in countries where interventionist policies are widely accepted. Also, existing quota laws are positively related to citizens' support of boardroom quotas.

Abstract
Wir analysieren Erwerbs- und Einkommensbiografien von Paaren mittels einer Multichannel-Sequenzmusteranalyse, um Rückschlüsse auf das Alterseinkommen von Frauen in Deutschland und Ausgleichsprozesse im Haushaltskontext abzuleiten. Datengrundlage ist eine Verknüpfung der administrativen Daten der gesetzlichen Rentenversicherung mit dem "Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe", die Biografieinformationen west- und ostdeutscher Personen der Geburtskohorten 1927 bis 1965 (N = 2.292) enthält. Wir identifizieren acht Paarverlaufsmuster, die sich in ihrer Nähe zu einem männlichen Alleinverdiener- oder einem Zweiverdienermodell unterscheiden. Während Frauen von kontinuierlicher Erwerbstätigkeit und kurzen Erziehungsunterbrechungen in Hinblick auf ihr Individual- und Haushaltseinkommen substanziell profitieren, stellen Biografien mit Erwerbsausstieg ein Armutsrisiko auf Haushaltsebene dar, das im Alter nur durch stark überdurchschnittliche Partnereinkommen ausgeglichen werden kann.

Abstract
Die Arbeitsbedingungen von wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern in Deutschland sind durch eine ambivalente Mischung aus hoher Autonomie und interessanten Arbeitsinhalten einerseits, unsicheren Arbeitsverhältnissen und unklaren Karriereaussichten andererseits geprägt. Wir analysieren die Einflussfaktoren der work-life balance in dieser Gruppe und beziehen sowohl den Konflikt von Arbeit und Privatleben (work-life conflict) als auch die wechselseitige Bereicherung (work-life enrichment) ein. Für die empirischen Analysen verwenden wir Daten einer Onlinebefragung von 96 wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern in den Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften einer deutschen Universität aus dem Jahr 2015. Mit linearen Regressionsanalysen untersuchen wir, wie Arbeitsbedingungen und -ressourcen work-life conflict und work-life enrichment beeinflussen. Zentrales Ergebnis unserer Analyse ist, dass insbesondere befristete Verträge und Wochenendarbeit den work-life conflict erhöhen. Eine gute Arbeitsatmosphäre im Team trägt hingegen zu einer Bereicherung des Privatlebens bei.

AbstractWir untersuchen aus einer Lebenslaufperspektive die Arbeitsmarktsituation älterer Personen im internationalen Vergleich und beziehen dabei sowohl Frühverrentung als auch Arbeitslosigkeit ein. Zentrale Hypothese unserer Analyse ist, dass die Wirkung von Sozialpolitik auf die Beschäftigungschancen Älterer nicht einheitlich ist, sondern von der individuellen vorangegangenen Erwerbsbiografie abhängt. Datengrundlage ist der "Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe", insbesondere die Lebenslaufdaten der dritten Welle (SHARELIFE, 2008/09) aus zwölf europäischen Ländern. Unsere Analysegruppe sind männliche Befragte ab 50 Jahren. Als kontextuelle Faktoren beziehen wir institutionelle Frühverrentungsanreize sowie Kündigungsschutzregelungen ein. Um Interaktionseffekte zwischen sozialpolitischen und individuellen Charakteristika zu schätzen, verwenden wir Mehrebenen-Regressionen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen unterschiedliche Mechanismen für Arbeitslosigkeit und Frührente. Unterschiede im Arbeitslosigkeitsrisiko Älterer sind vor allem auf individuelle Faktoren zurückzuführen; Personen mit vormals instabilen Erwerbsverläufen und atypischer Beschäftigung sind besonders betroffen. Das Gegenteil trifft auf Frühverrentung zu: Personen mit stabilen Erwerbskarrieren in regulärer Beschäftigung weisen hierfür eine höhere Wahrscheinlichkeit auf. Dieser Zusammenhang wird durch generöse Frühverrentungsmöglichkeiten zusätzlich verstärkt. Strikte Kündigungsschutzregelungen erhöhen dagegen die Beschäftigungswahrscheinlichkeit von Personen mit stabilen Erwerbsverläufen, allerdings nur, wenn die institutionalisierten Frühverrentungsanreize dem nicht entgegenwirken.
