Der Anblick der Siedlung am Vogelherd auf dem Nordhang des ehemaligen Konzentrationslagers Flossenbürg hat gerade in den letzten Jahren wieder verstärkt für Diskussionsstoff gesorgt. Denn während sich unterhalb der Häuser ein Gedenkstättengelände erstreckt, gehen die heutigen Bewohner auf dem Standort der einstigen Häftlingsbaracken ihrem ganz alltäglichen Leben nach. Die Siedlungshistorie führt zurück in die unmittelbare Nachkriegszeit, wo im Zuge der Wohnungsnot durch die Gemeinde Flossenbürg gezielt Flüchtlinge und Vertriebene für den Kauf und Bau der Häuser angeworben wurden. Heute kann das Gelände weder vom Anspruch des Gedenkens, noch von seiner Konnotation als Wohn- und Lebensraum entkoppelt werden. Im Rahmen dieses Bandes wird die Geschichte der Siedlung aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln beleuchtet. Dabei kommen im besonderen Maße auch die Biographien einstiger und jetziger Bewohner zum Tragen. Am Beispiel des Vogelherdes lässt sich anschaulich nachvollziehen, wie die differenten Schichten einer Geländenutzung dessen Historie prägen und wie unterschiedliche Narrative zu einer emotionalen Aufladung führen.

AbstractThis article considers the inclusion of the best interests of the child standard in the family law regimes of Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as its implications for our understanding of families in the Persian Gulf region. Specifically, the degree and ends to which the concept of the best interests of the child have been used in formulating the rules governing domestic child law generally, and parental care in particular, will be investigated. As the best interests of the child standard remains a vague and largely undefined legal concept in all three family codes, the analysis will not limit its focus on statutory approaches to reforming child law. More importantly, this article also considers legal practice in child law and the courts' interpretation of the best interests of the child standard. In doing so, the article: (i.) discusses how the introduction of the best interests of the child standard has served to reform family law on its codification in Bahrain, Qatar, and the UAE; and (ii.) explores what the interpretation of the concept of best interests of the child tells us about changing societal values, family structures, and present-day attitudes towards motherhood and fatherhood in the GCC. I argue that, although the best interests of the child standard has come to influence most aspects of child law in the three countries under review, its usage and meaning remains inconsistent. The concept serves multiple purposes in the area of parental care in particular. What is still missing in all three jurisdictions is a thoroughly grounded and all-encompassing framework to determine the best interests of the child standard and also an understanding of its overall function within family law.

Abstract
One major area of discussion during the 2005 process of initially codifying Muslim personal status law in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were regulations regarding the divorced mother's right to custody of her minor children. The new rules regarding the allocation and duration of female custodianship are the outcome of fiery debates amongst various actors involved in the codification process. The new codified custody rules differ from traditional Islamic law and concede large discretionary powers to the judiciary. The courts' discretion in allocating custody is verbalized in the term "maṣ laḥat al-maḥḍūn" (the welfare of the child under custody). At the same time, courts in the UAE have thus far refrained from defining in clear terms what actually constitutes the child's welfare. While one of the major aims of the codification of Muslim personal status law in the UAE was to guarantee legal certainty, the reformed custody regulations do not serve this purpose. They rather point towards the legislator's will to put in force more flexible rules on custody which allow for the accommodation of changing societal needs and values.

This editorial argues for more research connecting media and communication as a discipline and the Arab Uprisings that goes beyond the mainstream techno‐deterministic perceptions. The contributions in this thematic issue can be summarized around three central arguments: First, mainstream media, like TV and journalism, are central and relevant actors in the post‐Arab Uprisings phase which have often been overlooked in previous literature. Second, marginalized actors are still engaged in asymmetric power struggles due to their vulnerable status, the precarious political economy, or a marginalized geographic location outside centralized polities. Finally, the third strand of argument is the innovative transnational
geographic and chronological synapses that studying media and Arab Uprisings can bring. The editorial calls for more critical and interdisciplinary approaches that follow a region marked by inherent instability and uncertainty.

Der Badische Chorverband, das sind im Jubiläumsjahr 2012 22 regionale Chorvereinigungen mit insgesamt über 203 610 Mitgliedern (davon 67 204 aktive Sängerinnen und Sänger) in 1497 Vereinen und 2023 Chören. Als moderner Dienstleister bietet er nicht nur Beratung und finanzielle Förderung, Weiterbildung und Schulung, Hilfestellung und Organisation, sondern auch kulturelles Networking und kulturpolitische Lobbyarbeit auf Landesebene, wo der Verband sich für die gesamtgesellschaftliche Stärkung des Chorgesangs einsetzt.
