Organization of the Collective Security Treaty – Development Trends
The article deals with issues related to the national and international security of the CIS (ang. Commonwealth of Independent States) countries. This article evaluates the CSTO (Eng. Collective Security Treaty Organization) as a regional collective security organization. By its legal nature, the CSTO is an intergovernmental international organization whose members and founders are exclusively states. The catalog of tasks and threats faced by the organization is constantly updated during the summits of the CSTO leaders. The aim of the collective security system of the CSTO states is to secure peaceful conditions for the continued development of states by preventing or eliminating various types of threats to peace, including war conflicts and joint defense against an attack one or more CSTO states. There are opportunities for the CSTO to become a better performing organization that will contribute to the emergence of a new security architecture in Eurasia. Currently, the role of regional security systems is objectively growing. The CSTO declares itself as a multifunctional international organization of a new type in the field of security. Its members are trying to combine in one structure the tasks of counteracting traditional threats, such as repelling military aggression against one of the CSTO members and new challenges (combating drug trafficking, illegal migration, terrorism, etc.). Cooperation within the organization mainly boils down to carrying out joint maneuvers and training, information exchange of Russian military equipment. Especially the latter element is an important reason for the membership of some states in the CSTO. An important element of the CSTO is the military aspect. The military potential consists of the forces of the member states in line with economic possibilities. Obviously, Russia has the greatest contribution to building this potential.
