; The lordship of the Beccaria, a branch of the great family from Pavia, on Arena Po, was established at the end of the thirteenth century, taking advantage of both the financial difficulties of the small municipality and the power of the family in Pavia. It was meant to last for centuries. Managed in a consortium form by various Beccaria exponents, it encountered difficulties also in relation to the political events of the duchy. Various documents are examined to investigate the nature, modalities and reality of the relations between the lords and the land in the final centuries of the Middle Ages, especially from the fiscal, economic and agricultural point of view.
; The figure of Regina della Scala, Bernabò Visconti's wife, is here reconsidered on the basis of available chronicles and documents. About her political agency, Regina was often involved by her husband in a "joint dominion" over some cities. Her strong and determined action in promoting her male sons to the detriment of her nephew and son-in-law Gian Galeazzo Visconti is emphasized. The Scaligera received from her husband, at various times, a complex of localities, funds and jurisdictions very scattered in the territory of the Visconti domain, from which she drew income and wealth. Rather than forming her own domain, Regina cultivate the project of achieving autonomy and resources to promote her and Bernabò Visconti's descendants.
; The collection of legal consilia of the milanese jurist Signorolus de Homodeis senior (1300 ca.-1371) is examined to show how a reputed man of law, who successfully taught in various italian Universities, faced the great changes that were taking place in Trecento society and politics. The grants of pardon and grace, the criminal procedures, the emergence of the Visconti's dinasty at the expense of communal institutions, the changing role of magistrates and officials, the public debt's procedures, the agreements of mutual protection between territorial powers, were considered and examined in the light of legal knowledge. Even the lawyer's forma mentis, shaped in the tradition of Roman law, was often bent and adapted to the new demands and needs.
; Nine lists of 220 potential lenders of money compiled by the new duke of Milan Francesco Sforza's agents in 1451 are here edited along with short biographical notes. An introduction explain the possible criteria of the choice. The first criterium was wealth, since many of them belonged to the medium-high segment of the milanese class of merchants and businessmen. Secondarily, a large section of the lenders was deeply compromised with the experience of the Repubblica ambrosiana (1447-1450): therefore, the forced loans may also be considered a measure against political dissidence.
; In 15th century Lombardy Bertola da Novate e Giuliano Guasconi were two distinguished technicians which gained the attention of the political authorities for their expertise in digging artificial rivers, inventing idraulic tools and introduce agricultural innovations. Their formation and preparation were really different: Bertola attended the school of a venetian maestro d'abaco who probably teached geometry and technical design. On the contrary, Giuliano belonged to a family of landowners which had experimented many technical improvements in their lands and as officers in ducal estates. Both Novate and Guasconi were at the forefront of the great innovation which transformed the rural landscape and the water system in the Lombard country.
; Duke Filippo Maria Visconti's last years were troubled by many signs of crisis, although the duchy of Milan enjoyed a large prosperity and consolidated his political structures. Less lucid foreign politics, growth of fiscal pressure on subjects and communities, some abuses of power by courtiers and ducal officials produced a large discontent. The alienation of fiefs and ducal properties was largely used to cope with the increase of the current expenses: lands, estates and castles were utilised as pledges given to the main lenders. Nevertheless, more than the growth of the tax burden, subjects and communities complained about the authoritarian decision-making style that replaced the previous tolerance. Some local revolts, new pretentions by the condottieri and harsh complaints against corrupted officials and courtiers were the consequences of this crisis.
In 15th century Lombardy, petitions addressed to the dukes of Milan were not spontaneous writings. They were rather elaborated texts ; formulated by experts on writing, petitions were drafted in legal forms, and often written in latin. They also were defective and incomplete texts, which were completed and transformed in "rescripts" when the prince (or his magistrates) attached his signature and the date. Shaped in a "fictional" sequence of events and motivations, the petitions aimed at obtaining a ducal privilege, that is a benevolent act from the prince. The duke's propaganda claimed that subjects could easily reach the prince's authority using either petitions or public audiences ; in turn, the petitioners presented themselves as poor and defenseless, and begged protection from the ducal power. Eventually, these procedures reflect the novelty of post-communal institutions and build a new image of the Prince. The Italian archives preserve a wide range of the many types of concessions that followed a petition: licenses, safe-conducts, privileges, immunities, pardons and graces, summary legal proceedings. The Visconti-Sforza, as other Italian lords, experimented such a new technique of power and adopted a principle of "equity" which allowed them to manipulate and trespass laws and statutes.
