Abstract:This article explores critical directions in the study of cultural heritage and, in particular, food heritage research. Its goal is to deliver insight into local perspectives produced outside mainstream heritage organizations. Strategies implemented jointly by peasant farmers of rural Peru and non-governmental organizations committed to promoting cultural resurgence show how food discloses the symbiotic relation between nature and culture in these indigenous worlds, and allows for claims grounded in social, political, and economic imaginaries. The initiatives described in this article develop within transnational networks of partners and interlocutors but outside of universalist pretensions. They constitute food heritage that differs from that of global cultural actors such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the United Nations by addressing only the needs of local communities and not complying with mechanisms that bring prestige and revenues to states and powerful cultural entrepreneurs. Globally nurtured, but locally implemented, these locally based initiatives seek out and take advantage of opportunities in strategic, proactive fashions.

Résumé: Cet article ambitionne d'analyser la gastro-diplomatie, devenue une tendance dans les relations internationales, comme un ensemble de pratiques institutionnelles qui repousse les limites des usages politiques des cultures alimentaires. J'essaierai de montrer que l'essor actuel du concept tient à ce qu'il s'étend aux niveaux national et international, à sa nature intrusive et performative (c'est-à-dire, génératrice de participation et d'action) et à sa forte charge idéologique. Plus précisément, rendrai compte de la façon dont la gastro-diplomatie, telle qu'elle est instrumentalisée par des agences publiques et privées, participe de la fabrication des imaginaires pour faciliter l'adhésion des citoyens aux intérêts des élites politiques et économiques.Mots-clés: gastro-diplomatie, relations internationales, cuisine, gastronomie, nation branding***Gastrodiplomacy: a (Not-So-) Soft PowerAbstract: This article aims to analyze gastrodiplomacy, which has become a trend in international relations, as a set of institutional practices that pushes the boundaries of the political uses of food cultures. I will show that the rise of the concept in recent years lies to the fact that it extends to the national and international levels, its intrusive and performative nature (that is, generative of participation and action) and strong ideological charge. More specifically, I will address the way in which gastrodiplomacy, as instrumentalized by public and private agencies, participates in the making of imaginaries aimed at facilitating the adhesion of citizens to the interests of political and economic elites.Keywords: gastrodiplomacy, international relations, cuisine, gastronomy, nation branding

Peruvian cuisine is currently arousing muchenthusiasm among Peruvians, who see in itpossibilities of economic and social development as well as a sentiment of national pride. Expectations of the culinary potential havereached the current political agenda. Merging public and private interests, the media play an active role in building a sense of communityand in the formulation of a new idea of nationwith food as its spearhead. Drawing on threerecent films, this article analyzes culinary nationalism in Peru as a political discourse and a performative agent. Résumé La recomposition des classes sociales est en train de changer profondément le rapport à la ville des Liméniens. Dans ce processus, les pratiques culturelles de l'upper-middle class attirent une attention particulière, car elles reflètent fidèlement les aspirations matérielles et culturelles de cette population, très éloignées de celles d'une classe moyenne dite traditionnelle, ayant subi les transformations socio-économiques des deux dernières décennies, et d'une classe dite émergente, aux origines andines. La scène de musiques électroniques et les pratiques gastronomiques constituent des entrées intéressantes pour étudier cette fraction de classe, dans la mesure où elles permettent de comprendre comment les lieux qu'elles délimitent et les comportements dont elles sont le cadre sont en lien avec les mécanismes de construction, de délimitation et d'identification du groupe social en question.
