Environmental Determinants of Generic Competitive Strategies: Preliminary Evidence from Structured Content Analysis of Fortune and Business Week Articles (1983-1984)1
In: Human relations: towards the integration of the social sciences, Band 42, Heft 4, S. 353-369
ISSN: 1573-9716, 1741-282X
This paper seeks to determine whether the implementation of a generic competitive strategy (Porter, 1980) reflects variations in the competitive variables of customer price sensitivity and product differentiability, and whether tailor-fitting business strategy to the competitive environment is associated with a higher level of financial performance. Data on 59 companies cross-listed in the Compustat financial data base were obtained from a content analysis of Fortune and Business Week articles during the period 1983-1984. The data partially support the expectations from the Strategic Planning Associates (SPA) matrix, particularly those defining the determinants of differentiation and cost leadership. The findings further suggest the value of an environment/strategy fit to improving the firm's financial performance, particularly its long-term earnings growth.

Achieving Strategy/Manager Fit
In: Journal of managerial psychology, Band 4, Heft 5, S. 17-24
ISSN: 1758-7778
Whether a change in the composition of top management reflects the
magnitude of a company′s strategic change, and whether this fit between
strategic change and top management change is related to organisational
effectiveness are discussed. Data were yielded by a content analysis of
1981‐82 Business Week articles on 106 US business organisations.
It is suggested by the findings that top management change follows a
strategic change when the latter involves a change in both the
firm′s grand strategy and its strategy‐making orientation.

Characterising frailty, metrics of continuous glucose monitoring, and mortality hazards in older adults with type 2 diabetes on insulin therapy (HARE):a prospective, observational cohort study
Summary Background: To our knowledge, no previous study has examined the inter-relationship between frailty, dysglycaemia, and mortality in frail older adults with type 2 diabetes who are on insulin therapy. We used continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) to profile this patient population and determine the prognostic value of CGM metrics. We hypothesised that incremental frailty was associated with increased hypoglycaemia or time below range (TBR). Methods: HARE was a multicentre, prospective, observational cohort study with mortality hazard analysis carried out in four hospitals in Hong Kong. Eligible participants were community-living adults aged 70 years and older; had had type 2 diabetes for 5 years or more; were on insulin therapy; were frail; and were not hospitalised at the time of frailty assessment and CGM recording. Glucose control was characterised according to the Advanced Technologies and Treatments for Diabetes 2019 international consensus clinical targets. Frailty index was computed, and comprehensive frailty assessments and targeted serum metabolic profiling were performed. The Jonckheere-Terpstra test for trend was used to analyse frailty index tertiles and variables. Inter-relationships between CGM metrics and frailty, glycated haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and serum albumin were characterised using adjusted regression models. Survival analysis and Cox proportional hazard modelling were performed. Findings: Between July 25, 2018, and Sept 27, 2019, 225 participants were recruited, 222 of whom had CGMs fitted and 215 of whom had analysable CGM data (190 were frail, 25 were not frail). Incremental frailty was associated with older age, greater HbA1c, worse renal function, and history of stroke. Eight of 11 CGM metrics were significantly associated with frailty. Decreased time in range (TIR; glucose concentration 3·9–10·0 mmol/L) and increased time above range (TAR) metrics were strongly correlated with increased frailty and hyperglycaemia, whereas TBR metrics were marginally or not different between frailty levels. Glucose-lowering agents did not significantly affect regression estimates. In patients with HbA1c of 7·5% or more, reduced serum albumin was associated with level 2 TAR (glucose concentration >13·9 mmol/L) and dysglycaemia. During a median follow-up of 28·0 months (IQR 25·3–30·4), increased level 2 TAR was predictive of mortality explainable by frailty in the absence of detectable interaction. Each 1% increment of level 2 TAR was associated with 1·9% increase in mortality hazard. Interpretation: In older adults with type 2 diabetes who are on insulin therapy, incremental frailty was associated with increased dysglycaemia and hyperglycaemia rather than hypoglycaemia. Mortality hazard was increased with severe hyperglycaemia. Future clinical studies and trials targeting actionable CGM metrics highlighted in this study could translate into improved care and outcomes. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 38.6 fb(-1). They are combined with the data collected at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 5.1 and 19.7 fb(-1), respectively. All observations are consistent with the expectations for the standard model Higgs boson. (C) 2017 The Author. Published by Elsevier B.V.

New physics may contribute in the gluon-gluon fusion loop, the dominant Higgs boson production mechanism at the LHC, and manifest itself through deviations from the distributions predicted by the standard model. Combined spectra for the H -> gamma gamma, H -> ZZ, and H -> b (b) over bar decay channels and the inclusive Higgs boson production cross section are presented, based on proton-proton collision data recorded with the CMS detector at root s = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The transverse momentum spectrum is used to place limits on the Higgs boson couplings to the top, bottom, and charm quarks, as well as its direct coupling to the gluon field. No significant deviations from the standard model are observed in any differential distribution. The measured total cross section is 61.1 +/- 6.0 (stat) +/- 3.7 (syst) pb, and the precision of the measurement of the differential cross section of the Higgs boson transverse momentum is improved by about 15% with respect to the H -> gamma gamma channel alone. Theories that predict such a particle have been proposed as an explanation of various experimental discrepancies, including the lack of a dark matter signal in direct-detection experiments, tension in the measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, and reports of possible lepton flavor universality violation in B meson decays. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 77.3 fb(-1) recorded in 2016 and 2017 by the CMS detector at the LHC. Events containing four muons with an invariant mass near the standard model Z boson mass are analyzed, and the selection is further optimized to be sensitive to the events that may contain Z -> Z'mu mu -> 4 mu decays. The event yields are consistent with the standard model predictions. Upper limits of 10(-8)-10(-7) at 95% confidence level are set on the product of branching fractions B(Z -> Z'mu mu)B(Z' -> mu mu), depending on the Z' mass, which excludes a Z' boson coupling strength to muons above 0.004-0.3. These are the first dedicated limits on L-mu - L-tau models at the LHC and result in a significant increase in the excluded model parameter space. The results of this search may also be used to constrain the coupling strength of any light Z' gauge boson to muons. (C) 2019 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.

The analysis uses the data set collected with the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions during the 2012 and 2016 LHC running periods. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 (35.9) fb(-1) at root s = 8 (13) TeV. The expected and observed 95% confidence level upper limits on the product of the cross section and branching fraction into two photons are presented. The observed upper limit for the 2012 (2016) data set ranges from 129 (161) fb to 31 (26) fb. The statistical combination of the results from the analyses of the two data sets in the common mass range between 80 and 110 GeV yields an upper limit on the product of the cross section and branching fraction, normalized to that for a standard model-like Higgs boson, ranging from 0.7 to 0.2, with two notable exceptions: one in the region around the Z boson peak, where the limit rises to 1.1, which may be due to the presence of Drell-Yan dielectron production where electrons could be misidentified as isolated photons, and a second due to an observed excess with respect to the standard model prediction, which is maximal for a mass hypothesis of 95.3 GeV with a local (global) significance of 2.8 (1.3) standard deviations. The search targets the production of a Higgs boson via vector boson fusion. The data are found to be in agreement with the background contributions from standard model processes. An observed (expected) upper limit of 0.33(0.25), at 95% confidence level, is placed on the branching fraction of the Higgs boson decay to invisible particles, assuming standard model production rates and a Higgs boson mass of 125.09GeV. Results from a combination of this analysis and other direct searches for invisible decays of the Higgs boson, performed using data collected at root s = 7, 8, and 13 TeV, are presented. An observed (expected) upper limit of 0.19(0.15), at 95% confidence level, is set on the branching fraction of invisible decays of the Higgs boson. The combined limit represents the most stringent bound on the invisible branching fraction of the Higgs boson reported to date. This result is also interpreted in the context of Higgs-portal dark matter models, in which upper bounds are placed on the spin-independent dark-matter-nucleon scattering cross section. Such signatures are predicted in a number of extensions of the standard model (SM), including next-to-minimal supersymmetry and two-Higgs-doublet models with an additional scalar singlet. The results are based on a data set of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1), accumulated with the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No statistically significant excess is observed with respect to the SM backgrounds in the search region for pseudoscalar masses from 20 GeV to half of the Higgs boson mass. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction, sigma B-h(h -> a(1)a(1) -> mu (+)mu(-) b (b) over bar), ranging from 5 to 33 fb, depending on the pseudoscalar mass. Corresponding limits on the branching fraction, assuming the SM prediction for sigma(h), are (1-7) x 10(-4). (C) 2019 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.
