UM VELHO DILEMA? CIVILIZAÇÃO E CULTURA EM HENRI-ALEXANDRE JUNOD
In: Revista sociologia & antropologia, Band 11, Heft 1, S. 249-277
ISSN: 2238-3875
Resumo O artigo explora a trajetória do etnógrafo-missionário Henri-Alexandre Junod (1863-1934).
Modern Intimacies and Modernist Landscapes: Chinese Photographs in Late-Colonial Mozambique
In: Lusotopie: enjeux contemporains dans les espaces lusophones, S. 181-212
ISSN: 1768-3084
Abstract
This paper addresses a specific aspect of the social and cultural life of the Luso-Chinese in Mozambique, whose first contingents came from the Chinese province of Guangdong in the second half of the 19th century. Most settled in the city of Beira. By the 1950s, the Chinese community was already well integrated into modern life in colonial Beira. The city was going through an unprecedented urban and architectural boom. At that time, the Luso-Chinese, who were essentially merchants, also began to stand out in the field of photography. Based on a multi-sited ethnography among the Portuguese-Chinese diaspora – and their family photo albums – this paper reflects on two inseparable aspects of late-colonial modernity: architecture and photography.

In: Revista EntreRios, Band 2, Heft 2, S. 09-32
ISSN: 2595-3753
The birth of cultural materialism? A debate between Marvin Harris and António Rita-Ferreira
In: Vibrant: Virtual Brazilian Anthropology ; Revista semestral publicada pela Associação Brasileira de Antropologia, Band 13, Heft 1, S. 1-21
ISSN: 1809-4341
Abstract This article addresses a specific phase in the career of Marvin Harris, the founder of cultural materialism: his fieldwork in Mozambique. In particular, it examines the debate on the migration of the "indígenas" of Mozambique to the mines of South Africa, in which he engaged with António Rita-Ferreira, a colonial civil servant and amateur anthropologist (or "self-made scholar", as he liked to represent himself). The article analyses that debate from two related perspectives: a disciplinary or anthropological perspective, and an historical-political one, marked by the movement of decolonisation in the second half of the 1950s
