Abstract
Roma communities remain Europe's most marginalized and disadvantaged population, facing increasing discrimination,
especially after the 2015 refugee crisis. European media often portrays them as criminals or anti-social, furthering
misunderstanding and social exclusion. This article examines Swedish news media's representation of Roma, which, at a surface
level, appears much less negative. Using Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis, we analyze two Swedish newspapers' coverage of
the controversial law which sought to criminalize begging, which targeted Eastern European Roma migrants. Our findings reveal that
'Swedish exceptionalism'–a discourse of human rights, equality, colorblindness, characterized by limited racial literacy–serves to
obscure and act as a disclaimer for anti-Roma sentiment and government actions which in fact resemble those criticized in other EU
countries.

Strategic diagrams are becoming ubiquitous across all forms of social practices, used to map out core elements and processes in private and public institutions and also for more localized and individual activities – where, for example, so that it reads: where, for example, early years school children can manage attitudinal goals. These are easy to produce with cheap software providing templates and tools to do so. This paper shows how these diagrams must be placed in the ideological shift to neoliberal governance with its emphasis on the market, flexibility and competition. All things and processes, however intangible, are viewed as assets with simple cause-effect relations, to be converted into tangible outcomes and maximised outputs. Taking a multimodal critical discourse analysis approach, we analyse two cases, from a university and an early-years school.

Discourses of war are disseminated and legitimised not only through speeches and written texts, but through visual semiotic resources. One important vehicle for this has been the war monument. Evidence shows that from WW1 in Europe and the US monuments have been used systematically by authorities to recontextualise the realities of war and soldiery, suppressing much of what comprises war, avoiding any critical stance, while fostering celebratory discourses of nation, protection and noble sacrifice. The representation of women on the war monument has been particularly important in this recontexualisation. Using Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis to examine the discourses realised by British war monuments, this paper shows that while much of the way women participate in and experience war has been suppressed on war monuments. Their representation has been a key part of the legitimation of one particular discourse of war, a representation that has helped to sideline other possible discourse in British society and which is still used in the commemoration of the death of 'our boys' — such as the young men killed in Afghanistan.

Market dynamics has led to a dramatic transformation of the Spanish and Greek media systems since the late 1980s, bringing them in line with West European patterns. The current media landscape is, thus, a far cry from the introvert, parochial press and broadcasting systems present in the two countries in the first 15 years of democratic government, when the partisan political control of radio and television and the overpoliticization of the press were dominant features of their media systems. The aim of this article is to analyse the key developments in the media industries of these two Southern European countries and identify the elements of continuity and change through an examination of the interplay between the state, the market and the media. Despite the multiplication of media outlets, it is argued, state policy in the media is determined as ever by the persistent culture of political expediency, typical of the European south, as political elites still seek desperately to influence the content of political coverage.

Die Marktdynamik hat seit den späten 1980er Jahren zu einer dramatischen Transformation der spanischen und griechischen Mediensysteme geführt mit dem Resultat derer Anpassung an westeuropäische Muster. Die gegenwärtige Medienlandschaft erinnert nur noch von Ferne an die introvertierten, provinzlerischen Presse- und Rundfunksysteme, die in beiden Ländern während der ersten 15 Jahre eines demokratischen Regierungssystems kennzeichnend waren. Diese Jahre wurden geprägt durch parteipolitische Kontrolle von Hörfunk und Fernsehen und Überpolitisierung der Presse. Der Beitrag untersucht das Zusammenspiel von Staat, Markt und Medien mit dem Ziel, die wichtigsten Entwicklungen in den Medienindustrien dieser beiden südeuropäischen Ländern zu analysieren und die Elemente von Kontinuität und Wandel zu identifizieren. Trotz einer Vervielfältigung des Medienangebots ist die politische Berichterstattung in den Medien wie zu allen Zeiten gekennzeichnet durch eine Kultur politischer Nützlichkeitserwägungen, die typisch für den europäischen Süden ist, wo politische Eliten immer noch mit aller Macht versuchen, den Inhalt der politischen Berichterstattung zu beeinflussen.
